Actually i have not really seen many people deadlifing real heavy in the flesh...  Does EVERYONE here all able to pull 400 plus for 5?? But then again...it is the internet. :-\
come on man 400 for 5 aint even that much more than you say you're pulling, 405 for reps is a good deadlift but it's nothing all that great, the deadlift is something you should be loading on the plates for, you're using your whole damn body.

have you ever seen a picture of Panda, "pecs"? the guy looks like he lifts the back end of Boeing 737's all day.

Hang SF.. I thought Panda is 255 pounds cage fighter and deadlifting his opponents is one of his trademark move?
I am a mini beast

Yeah i guess so..., anyway i like to train and was only curious about the shin issue. Maybe i don't belong the GETBIG. Anyway thanks for those offering suggestions. This is an interesting forum. :)

get some baby powder and put it on your shins when you pull, that's what powerlifters do.

I am so hardcore, I put barb wire around the bar so it cuts up my shins and blood spills over the place. Pain, blood, guts, dedication, AAARGGGHHHH  >:(

ask Bluto to borrow "his" kneepads. He probably keeps them in the locker room shower anyways.

I would go ahead with the shin guards. When I do deads, I actually workout in a complete catcher's uniform, mask, chest protector and everything.

I'd suggest a denim jean jumpsuit just to be safe.

Exactly.

You could always wear thicker pants, which will help. But reality is, it's still gonna happen. Deal with it.....pretty legs are for women.
Funny you said that.  Once I was deadlifting in some pretty thick sweats, not for protection.

I was home to visit my parents for Christmas last year and decided to train at home.  Dad has a pretty much fully functional gym in the basement.  In Western NC it's cold as hell on a late December morning and there's no heat down there, so I was covered up!

I did my workout, didn't go too heavy, only worked up to 500 for some sets of 3 or 5 and didn't think too much about it.  I knew I hit my shins more than once, but didn't really regard it as anything unusual.

So, I finish my Deadlift/back workout and went upstairs for breakfast.  Mom says "What's on your pants?"  I looked down and there was blood coming through the leg of my sweats.  When I went to take them off, they had already started to scab up and stick to my leg!

Okay.  It sounded better in my head, but I thought it was pretty funny.

I've used that when going for a PR, or really haevy 3s or 5s.  I still bled, but it did cake up and keep the blood from making it to my socks!

I love deadlifts as i really feel it in my back and it is my strongest exercise..........BUT i always get several bruises on both my shins especially when i go heavy (3 to 5 reps).

Its been going on quite a while and i was wondering if that is normal or am i doing the lift wrongly? I am 5'9 and am quite sure that i am lifting right. Should i go to the extend of wearing shin protectors/guards? I don't think bruising on the same spot every week is good for my shin.

When i should be real HARDCORE and ignore it!  ???

Best you change your name from "Pecs" (oh brother) to "Vagina".

Guys, ease up.  He may be a beginner, very young or just not as far along as the rest of us.

Now I'm gonna get it.

bruising happens - means your form is tight

my left shin started bleeding though my sweat pants during my last session of deadlifts . . .
