because the moment you give the cop the power to determine which 'smart mouth' should be shoved down, you have a bigger problem.  The cop can now shove down 12, 10, 8, and 6 year olds who talk back. The cop can now shove down 60, 70, 80, and 90 year olds who talk back.

The moment you okay it for one incident (even if the kid is a douchebag) the minute you have a police state where ANYONE can be beaten at ANY TIME for ANYTHING.

This cop should have locked the kid up on whatever law he was breaking - disturbing the peace, etc.  Spending a night in juvenile hall getting shoved around might keep the kid from coming back to that park.

I agree with you in principle and I don't think anyone can say the cop didn't cross the line and should not be punished, etc. As a teacher, cop or any other authority figure, you must suck it up and deal with a-holes in a calm, firm manner.
Now , from what I know, the kid dodn't get anything hurt but his pride. Down deep a  lot of us quietly cheer this cop for grabbing that disrespectful punk LOL.
The kid realizes that even if has rights a cop (or other adult) can still go postal on him or his friends now .
The cop now knows that he is in big trouble if he acts like a wildman and gtes out of control.
All in all I think they both learned a valuable lesson.

I don't agree with what the cop did, but I do think that if you show a certain amount of cheek to a cop by being rude, then you ought to pay for it.

There are bad cops, but most cops do their job pretty well and keep ordinary citizens safe. Simply having cops around deters crime. If you need proof, then look at how an increased police force cleaned up NYC and made it a much better city. However, no one looks at that positive. They'd rather take up issue over some black dude who was high on PCP and running a muck and getting what was coming to him.

Ha, have you ever heard of the infamous Block? It used to be several blocks long of strip clubs and porno stores. Now it is just one block of it, and there is one of the Police stations right there. Corruption...Nah. But you don't do shit like that  at the Inner Harbor, let alone spit.  I was surprised of few number of people, if any who have fallen in the Harbor. That  is the Crown Jewel of Baltimore and they enforce the law with swift Nazi  discipline.

And we don't know if the kid was told before not to skateboard, or if he had a prior chance. We only saw what the kid with the camera taped.

Police conduct is a delicate balance of multiple interests, but the resistance to escalating force in a situation such as the one seen in the video simply must be preserved.  Police have to escalate force as the situation asks for it - in the situation above it simply did not apply.  What could that kid have done to him?  Also it is not anyone's obligation to call a cop "Sir".  If I were to get pulled over for a reason that I knew was my fault, I would comply and be polite, but ultimately shut my mouth, and not give my up my rights.  If I was being bullied or harassed by a police officer, I would escalate the force as per necessary to protect myself if I felt I was in immediate danger.  Who wouldn't?

First of all my ignorant friend there are many escalations of force and the first step in the force triangle is verbal judo aka verbal manipulation and as mattc very nicely pointed out the kid needed to just shut up and comply.  Number two the kid never told the cop to fuck off he just kept disrespecting the cop by saying dude and I honestly bet that the kid was already so nervous that the dude thing was just an accident.  Honestly what the cop did and how he reacted was inappropriate but to look at it from the cops point of view he didnt know if the kid had a weapon (not to include his skateboard)or not and he was outnumbered so in that manner his best bet is to come in stern and hard with verbal manipulation but after that there was obviously no apparent threat from any of the kids he shouldve known to de-escalate the situation just as fast as he escalated it.  But as a society we have to entrust cops to make this judgement call, and knowone is perfect so there will always be cops getting in trouble for stuff like this where they just exhibited poor judgement.

The kid never told him to fuck off, and i agree with that the whole referring him to as "dude" and "man" was a nervous reaction. Thats what kids their age say all the time, he was nervous and he probably didn't even realise that someone would take that as disrespect. He was 12 years old and skateboarding, the cop is obviously an insecure prick and wanted to feel like a big man about himself. Think about all the shit that happens in the world, you think its ok for a cop to wrestle a 12 year old to the ground and yell in his face for skateboarding and the kid not realising he was disrespecting him by calling him dude?

I think some people are commenting without watching the entire video.  The cop can yell and have a meltdown over an innocuous "dude" comment all he wants, but the moment he puts his hands on the kid (without any provocation or need for "self-defense"), he has STEPPED OVER THE LINE. If that kid is not under arrest, the cop has no more right to tackle him than he does to tackle any of us because he doesn't like the way we look, talk, or dress.

Like many cops, that FATASS is nothing more than a BULLY WITH A BADGE. After he gets fired, hopefully the next time he mouths off to some skateboarders, he'll catch a skateboard to the teeth, a la the movie 'KIDS'.

I deal with teens all the time as a high school teacher. Sometimes you feel like doing something like that when some punk is a jackass. The bottom line is that no matter what the kid does, you have to do your absoulte best to maintain control and not lose it.You have to suck it up and be the adult in these cases and act in a calm,firm ,fair manner The cop should have simply stopped the kid and took his skateboard, end of story. I suspect the cop know he blew it on this one.
