the story was posted on the new york times.com last night at 10 pm   to me, it's no big deal and certainly no comparison to president clinton lying to a grand jury in the paula jones case

on one hand, it's his business what he does in his personal life.

Problem here is that the allegations are that this hottie lobbyist influenced his voting record and gave a lot of $ to him in areas where his team voted in her favor.

That's corruption, if it's true.

regardless of party affiliation media is always looking for the skeltons in the closet...we all have them surely Obama has got some its just a matter of time to as when they will be found.

In the end it is very important that our leaders be truthful in all areas of thier lives regardless of how painful it might be for them or thier family to tell the truth.....

but then again we are all human so - shit happens and staus quo will rule

I agree- they'll find dirt on obama, I'm sure.  hilary outed him for a shady Chicago business deal, and he admitted his own coke use.  Also, Camp Clinton accused obama of drug DEALING because he shared coke with his friends.

And I don't care if McCain dated whoever.  His business.

The problem here exists *IF* he broke laws.  Supposedly, McCain (chairman of the commerce committee) used his power to influence  laws regarding telecommunications companies.  She was a lobbyist for them, she spent a lot of time with mcCain on pvt flights, etc, prompting his team in 2000 to order her to stay away, as they were in risky waters.  *IF* her clients received favorable legislation, that is illegal.  It's called corruption, and is very serious.

Seems Mike huckabee campaign may have known about it.

This gives him a really good reason to stay in the race when everybody wanted him to pull out.

A lot of conservative voters are going to choose Huckabee in the HUGE march 4 primary date - big states like Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, Texas - Huckabee might have just won the V.P. nod - he won't have enough delegates to win the nomination, but he'll surely have enough to demand the VP slot and the runner status in 2012 should Mccain win in November.

Well played, huckleberry.

Well, you have 2 scenarios here.

Either several former high-level McCain campain employees all committed career suicide by lying...

Or mcCain is lying.

One of these parties is telling an outright lie here.  Initial empirical evidence (the letters that mccain did write on her behalf, as well as travel logs showing her by his side on private flights) support the former employees' story.

The NY Times has a huge responsibility to show their evidence now.  If they deliver evidence, then mcCain just lied to the nation, at which point... wow... this could be a HUGE story which could force him to pull out of campaign and turn the nomination into chaos.  If they don't, then the NY Times looks terrible here.

Wow... multiple sources all claim there was a romantic affair.

McCain CHALLENGED them to come forward.

Either it's former staffers with an axe to grind, or he is lying to save his political career.

If 2 or 3 or 4 guys all come forward tomorrow with details and something resembling evidence, then McCain will almost certainly have to pull out of the nomination process.  Huck and Romney (and Ron Paul?) will scramble to win his delegates.

My opinion and answer is the same as when Clinton got a BJ......" So what!"
Get this crap out of the political news UNLESS it relates to bribes or national security.
How come when some guy gets a ton of cash from a PAC or lobbyist, nobody even blinks.
Kelly Ryan married well!  Free Titus!

It's "so what" if he just did his thing.

It's more than that if he broke the law- used his influence in exchange for sex.

You recognize that, right howie?  You can't allow those with big power to arbitrarily use it for their own personal gain.  Plus, the man wants to be the most powerful man on earth.  he's very qualified for the job - but - if he indeed got caught for this once, it probably happened more than that, and it certainly disqualifies him from a job with much more ability to abuse.

It seems obvious that the NY times is slandering McCain.  They had this story many months ago when he was not the lock for the nomination.  This a purely political move to harm his credibility.  If a major newspaper prints a story like this they better be able to present detailed evidence and be certain.

So far, its a couple annonymous people who worked for a McCain large committee.  Who knows what their agenda is.  The fact is we have no idea what happened.  It could have easily been that he spent more time with her than others.  We have no proof there was a relationship of any kind and no proof their relationship affected his judgement.  The person that warned her may have been watching for this sort of accusation based on appearance, whether or not there is any truth to it.

If the NY Times doesn't present credible specific evidence, they should be scrutinized heavily and sued.

NY times got burned badly on the judith miller and jayson blair stories, IIRC.

Either they screwed the pooch badly here... or they just haven't shared their evidence yet, giving McCain a chance to lie and make himself look worse.

any lawsuit will not go far.  mccain is a public figure and proving defamation of a public figure is near impossible given the Supreme Court's standards.

IMO, newspapers like the NY times have a responsibility to investigate a story before publishing it, especially as it could significantly affect a presidential candidate and respected senator.  We need responsible journalism, not hearsay and speculation aimed with political motivation

The public should be demanding their evidence.

Hahahaha.  McCain will come and go, but the New York Times has been around forever.  Guess who's going to win this battle. Just read the article. They were very careful in their assertions. I hope McCain does go after the time and open up his personal Pandora's box.  ;D

calmus, I know you are an Obama fan but this transends the election.  (I'm not a huge McCain supporter just find this to be irresponsible and something that has come to be almost acceptible by papers).

Do you not believe the NY times has a responsibility to professional journalism and make sure the story has credibility and can be verified?  Do you believe they should come forward with details of their information?
