Also, I think an amateur can be awarded money and still be an amatuer if it was a non sanctioned event. Like say a NPC guy goes out and enter some contest at a bar and wins $500. I don't think that constitutes him as a Pro now. It was non-sanctioned.
pro vs amateur has no meaning any more. before, making any money from your muscles made you a pro. did personal training, you lost your amateur status. made money from photos, lost your amateur status. owned or even worked at a gym, lost your amateur status.
By that standard, not a single national level bodybuilder in the NPC qualifies as an amateur. Today NHL, NBA, and MLB players compete in the Olympics.
Here is another bodybuilding example, this time at the IFBB World level:
El Shahat Mabrouk (or is it Mabrouk El Shahat?) Has competed as an amateur at the world level from 1981 through last year. Been in the World Amateur Championships 16 times, winning his class 9 times, winning the overall in 2003. But in 1989 competed as a pro in the IFBB's Grand Prix Holland and Grand Prix Finland.
