If I only had THREE exercises, I would 86 the squats and substitute with bulgarian split. Thats if I ONLY had three.

I'd go:

Clean & Jerk.

Deadlift.

Pull-up/Chin up.

*Honorable mention to the Olympic Press.

All are large compound movements that add a lot to functional strength, and will build a very decent physique. They can also be done with very minimal equipment and safely.

No I dont think so.

Squat

Bench

Chin or Bent overlow

No need dead lift. You can hit with squat.
Bench is the king of upper body exercise.

Olympic Press? Is that similar to a military press?

bulgarians are awesome, but squats are far superior. The opportunities for progression are FAR greater on a squat than a bulgarian, you can only load a bulgarian squat so much.

A bit similar but not exactly- Here's a nice article on it, and why you don't see it in the Olympics anymore- jva.ontariostrongman.ca/PRESS.htm .

And here's the great Doug Hepburn demonstrating: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=vs8svOg9c9o .

...what would they be?

You could never ever do anything else.

For the most total body development, I'd choose:

1) squat
2) Deadlift
3) Chins

Pretty much hitting whole body with those three

4 exercises:

squats, deadlifts, incline bench press (better than dips as only upper body press movement), chins

A lot of people would build a far better body by simply following a protocol like that. Take 3 big compounds and spend your life's work getting better and stronger at them.

I'd go for squats, incline press and chins.

This is the way I look at it. Now follow me I'm not normal.............When I think of strength training, I think of functional type strength training. Lets go to the extream. If a someone told me that for the rest of my life that I could only do THREE exercises, would probably be the exercises I chose. Why?

1 arm DB snatch - stimulate the CNS, unilateral strength recruiting almost every motor unit in the upper body while building equal strength on both sides. Also, the conditioning in this particular exercises is amazing.

DB incline instead of straight bar because although it's indirect shoulder work, it's also chest, shoulder girdle stability and also by using DBs I recruit more motor units. I can also use the same exercise for unilateral strength.

.

Bulgarian splits - why? You don't walk or run on two legs. A great way to indirectly strengthen low back and psoas.

Substitute - 1 arm DB snatch for medicine ball complex.

All exercises are in that order.

bullshit as usual. when you have a limited number of exercises, you chose those that hit the most body parts at the same time and lets you use the biggest loads. incline db press is a very good exercise..but if you have to chose just one upper body press exercises the best choices are dips or incline barbell press.

squats are way better than bulgarian split squats if you have to chose the exercise that gives the most bang for the buck. (not saying bulgarian splits squats isnt a good exercise...i frequently use them myself...but in no way are they better than regular squats...not from a functional strength aspect, bodybuilding aspect etc)

deadlifts are better than bulgarian split squats too.

regarding the 1 arm DB snatch i agree somewhat. but in the end it doesnt qualify  as a top 3 or top 4 exercise.

Just a matter of philosophy. If I want to try and avoid injury for the rest of my life, I going to choose exercises that offer equal strength and greater mobility.

i know that alot of 'functional strength training gurus' recommend various esoteric exercises instead (as better alternatives to) of squats and deadlifts  (they need to make up shit to make money).  which is completely retarded. squats and deadlift (variations) are the best functional strength exercises by far. (for the lower body)

let me add: singel leg work is def good for functional strength (and sports training). but if you have to chose between squats or singel leg exercises like bulgarian split squats, reg split squats or pistol squats etc....reg squats are the best by far. (squats and deadlifts)
