My advice is to go easy over the next few months. Strength will come back fast -- too fast for your weakened tendons. You'll feel ready to press three plates, but your tendons won't. That's when you get hurt and you're back on the sidelines for a year.

Just take it easy. Rome wasn't built in a day. Show some discipline, progress pound by pound on the lifts in very measurable increments, and you'll find the size again. Rush it, and I'll take a bet you tear something in six months or less. Lots of guys do it, and it's totally preventable.
i definitly plan to follow your advice, it will be hard to hold back though, like i said with me its all or nothing!
i think modest increaes of 2.5-5lbs/workout should be good enough

i never understood this whole "muscle memory" shit.

If u lifted for 3 years in a row - gained 10- 20 lbs of "muscle" and stop working out for 2 years.

Suddenly u go back and achieve to the same level "sooner" than before? I dont think thats necessarily accurate and universal. There are tons of factors that go into play.

in my experience you will definitely see a major change in about 3 weeks give or take... but yes take it easy at first the tendon soreness is much worse in the beginning compared to actual muscle soreness, and they definitely dont snap back in conditioning the way your muscle tissue does.  if you stick to it and your diet and rest is right you can be close to what you were before within 3 months or so...

I am only using myself as an example here, with basically being out of the gym up to a year give or take an occasional workout once in a great while.... I had a slight abdominal tear and gave it plenty of time to heal up and didnt start back in the gym til I saw it was all good after getting a cat scan done.

i also forgot, that one of the reasons i quit working out for a bit was sciatic nerve and rotator cuff problems..i figured a little time off would do me some good

now whats wierd is, my pecs look/feel twice as big as they were before my workout yesterday. i wonder whats up with thta, doubt 'muscle' can grow quite that fast.

just a update:
im up 8 lbs this week. could it possibly be all muscle?? i dont see how you could gain that fast. i know i definitly didnt put on 8 lbs of fat

did back:
dead lifted 225x10 but it hurt my hands way too much so i had to lighten the weights.  never experience such pain in my hands from lifting, i must just not be used to it yet. im going to use straps next time.
i did squats, 205x 12
did shoulder presses, managed to use the 40lb dumbells for 10 reps.

so far so good.

im going to post some new pics once i get noticible progress

Tip:
If you stop training for extended periods of time and eat like shit, you will loose muscle and get fat.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Yes, fortunatly you will gain it all back very quickly.  Dont worry about poundages at first.  Just get your fat ass back in the gym.

I think muscle memory comes back very quickly. You really dont have too eat as much to get the size back in comparison to what it took to get there. Muscle fullness comes backvery quickly and then the dense muscle should follow. As far as the strength goes, to me certain things are kind of like riding a bike where there are some lifts you alway stay decent at. These layoffs happen to me now if I get injured or sick and they used to happen for 6-7 months a years when I was still in high school due to wrestling season and summer time. I have never taken 2 years off but I could take 3 - 4 months off and always be able to bench 315 for atleast one rep, I could be 20 pounds lighter but mentaly 315 is always doable and therefore I can always do it. I'm always puzzled by guys who loose it all in 2 months, I find it pointless for them to workout to the extreme cause they can loose it easily due to illness or busy life not maiing it worthwhile to spend so many hours in the gym for something so temporary.  If you were really 255 at 12% then you should be able to get to a respectable weight and strength level in no time as you should have good genetics for it. The first few weeks are always a little embarrassing and I always prefer to workout at home during this period. Good luck broskie.

a lot of that 8 lb. would be glycogen storage. now that you are using your muscle again it will store more muscle fuel. it is intramuscular and will give you an initial strength boost, not unlike creatine loading.

you should take more protein this first month than ever before as you can gain muscle faster than ever before.

i haven't trained in a year, and think i will start soon, so i'll keep you all posted.
