Vitamin C following a workout?
« on: October 09, 2008, 07:44:13 AM »
I've read it kills free radicals in the body, helps immune system, etc.
I've also read it, like NSAIDS, prevents the muscles from growing following training.

Do you take vitamin C following your workout?

Can you post the link to this research?  I definitely take it after every cardio and weight training session to boost immune function and prevent DOMS.

Research to back this claim?

I'll have to look when I get home but I think it's 500mg Ester C I'm taking now, it varies on what I buy on clearance or in bulk at Sam's/Costco.  My little girl brings home all sorts of germs and sniffles from the daycare so it's good to keep the immune system strong year round.

Anti-oxidants post workouts have been shown to increase oxidative stress. Take them before a workout.

Wont hurt muscle growth IMO.

I think it was an MD, I'll look.
The article was about how the things you eat that make you healthy, are often counter-productive to muscle growth.  Fish, for example, is great for health, but may retard growth following a workout.  Vitamin C is another.

Something about how our bodies release the toxic free radicals as a result of the cell destruction of lifting.  That is a good thing for muscle building, but bad for toxin buildup.

Vit C kills free radicals, but also kills growth as a result.  Not sure how much I'm paraphrasing or remembering correctly.  I'm all about killing free radicals, and I like my vitamin C and E a few times daily. JUst didn't know if it was particularly useful, or counter-productive, following a workout.

I don'tkonw what that means.  Can you explain how it would affect that 1-hour post-workout window, when the muscle groups are torn up and they're sucking all the protein from the blood that they can?

I take about 1g of vit-c after my workout and a multivitamin. I do this for almost 2 years.

Thx.  Based on that, I may cut them in half if they're 500mg but I'm still on the fence about taking them pre/post w/o.

I don't have the answer but I know it's pretty complicated and debated. But if you take them to reduce oxidative stress then take them before training. Many athletes feel antioxidants before training increase performance, especially the more potent ones like NAC, Idebenone, etc.

I failed Chemistry I.

Can anyone break it down in layman's terms?

Vit C before workout - good?
Vit C after workout - bad?

You wont find a definitive answer.

Don't worry about it. It wont hurt either way (a hunch  :D)

(if you choose to take vitamin c supplements at all)

Ive read this in the past also-------I remember some studies were mentioned in some muscle mags (dont remember doses etc)

I also remember you bringing up this question a while ago and I dont think we ever got a straight answer on it

I usually avoid vit C, unless I mix my protein in OJ, for a couple hrs after my workout

In downhill runners?  Weight training isn't exactly downhill running.

Who's gimmick are you anyway, Mr. 19 post supplement guru Galvatron?

The muscle damage is incredible when running downhill. Heavy eccentric loading of the quads.

Is it really worth finding the sufficient research on something so irrelevant?

yeah, today i'm turning off the morning political dabte and just working on sites and thinking about BBing for once.

Vitamin C is very important for killing off those free radicals, which lead to cell damage and cancers.  I want to include it, I just dont' want to screw up lifting results thru it's use.  I think i'll stick with taking it in AM and at night, and avoid messing with training recovery.
