Exersises people say not to do but you love....
« on: November 02, 2008, 09:04:36 PM »
For me people always say not to do dumbell kickbacks, its a girls exercise, to light, just do close grips, bla bla bla. I have found it to be a great move, if done with a light weight and a special way. Bent over on a flat bench, 1 knee on the bench, elbow up as in the final part of a dumbell row, and held way up there. Now to complete the rep do 1 sec. up, 1 sec. contracted, and 1 sec. down. When your arm is straight, you should give it an extra 1 sec. squeeze. Go fairly light and rep it out. Hits the long head extremely well, and cramps the hell out of it. Don't believe me, give it a shot, wacha got to lose, besides small arms ;D

When I met Rusty Jeffers I asked him about using different exercises, ie the right and wrong ones.  His answer was to use the exercises I liked and was the strongest on.  If that meant never doing a 225 lb BB row because I hated it but doing a 250 lb Tbar row then make those rows count.  The same could be said about any exercise.  Gary Strydom loves kickbacks and said that if you can do a kickback with 70 lbs for good form you will grow from them.  Just some food for thought.

I think thats pretty sound advice but Id also add that you cant shy away from exercises just b/c you dont like them and expect to get great results. I can go along with the t-bar rows but skipping out on squats for leg presses or chins or deads makes me think you are missing integral exercises that would make you grow much faster than their counter parts.

I agree with the above and would like to add:

I never stop with an exercise i like because someone on the internet tells me "it's for girls".

I do kickbacks occasionally, or lat pulldowns with straight arms or some "girly moves", but they are actually very good if used in a right way.

Behind the neck presses. I've been doing them for years with no problems.

The Press behind the neck and up-right rows are marked taboo for BB'ers by the self styled "experts". For most people, when done right, these two exercises are exceptional upper body mass builders. Even can prevent shoulder injury in the long run. I have SS'ed them together on occasion with good results.

Try doing those one arm kickbacks (near or a lockout position) with that 70lb DB (mentioned before) and see how strong some of you studly men really are. If KB's are included in regular workout (with serious intent) people  could be surprised that their bench may also be going up as well as their tricep size. Good Luck.

AH yes, I do like one arm side presses. To really understand what they are and how to preform them is quite easy. Just do a search. Quite different from the regular one arm DB press.  Which QuakerOat's and or SquadFather (or whatever handle he is using of late), get's confused by because of limited mental development. But normal people will have no trouble understanding the difference. Of course QO's is not familiar with working out anyway, just reads about it in his special men's and boy's fitness magazines.

With a little practice most everyone could use at least a 80 to 100lb DB for 8 to 12 reps. Just start from the bending to the side position with the DB locked out overhead at the finish of the exercise. Hit's the delts and upper body very well. Good for sports training. Read that Paul Anderson could use 300+ on this as well as some of the old time strong men using 220 plus in regular training. Good Luck

Side Bar: perhaps QO's would like to list his workouts and resistance he uses on his plastic BB set (Wal-Mart special reduced price) so we all might learn something about how he got his massive muscle development with that low 3% body fat?

I agree with you on the behind the neck press. Although it's been said it causes undue stress on the joints, I feel I get much better results and I like doing them more than presses in the front.  Same goes for Lat Pulldowns behind the neck as apposed to those done in the front.  I've been these two exercises the same way for as many years as I can remember and they've always seemed to work out for me.  Thanks.
