You don't have to do perfect reps.  Don't quit if you can still get 3/4 or 1/2 ROM.  Having a bench available to go straight into negs, assisted machine, and variable hand spacing are all good ideas.  Fool around with supinated, pronated, and palms facing type grips as well.

If your row is better, get setup with feet elevated and lower them by a couple inches each workout.  Never tried this but heard it recommended.

Why am I not able to do more than 2 reps after training once a week seriously (a part form beign an old fart)?

Thanks

Dude use one of those machines which takes weight off you. Or get better and better at lat pull-downs! If you can do 10 reps on 100kg lat puilldown you should be able to do a couple more real chins. How heavy are you?

Yeh, get on a lat pull down machine and take a chin grip and use a very easy weight. Increase slowly until you're pulling the a stack heavier than your bodyweight. Transfer to chins and bingo

I agree. I've started doing them again after a 1.5 yr layoff. Got 3x6 the first day and this week the reps went up. I'd like to say I'll soon be working with added weight, but some toolbox has again stolen the dipping belt from our gym. Un-fcuking-believable.  >:(

do 3 sets 3 times a week, do not max out on reps so right now you may be doing only 3 x 1, it is ok.  try to bump it up to 3 x 2, eventually to 3 x 5.

i'm finding what life without chinups is now. was bench pressing the other day, i finished up with a final set of 405 by 3, everything was fine even thought of adding another 20 but didn't. next day i went to do chins a pretty easy exercise for me, i didn't even get one full rep  felt something pop in my armpit area left gym immeadiately. i left it heal for about a week still have pain in armpit area but can do pretty much everything except chins lat pulldowns and triceps on lat machine.

Chins are a real bugger for me.

My bodyweight is around 18 stones (250) at about 30% b/f, and for my first chins set, I can manage only 11 reps. Second set, again a disappointing 11 good reps.

It's all about lever length, muscle density, bodyweight etc.

you're disappointed with 11 chins at 250 bodyweight? how high did you pull?

How high? All the way, of course. That's why they're known as chins, surely?

Chins are tough. Im about 210 (not ripped) and can wide pull down 230 10-12 reps. Can barely squeeze out 5 wide grip chins though.
