Hey guys, I just joined the Getbig Forums, and I'm interested in, well, getting big. I have a fairly decent physical condition (as in, I can run for a while and don't usually feel exhausted). I don't have cash for a personal trainer or gym (I had in the winter, but the lack of motivation made me fail). What I need is some basic tips on how to start. What exercises should I do? How often should I work out? Do I definitely need gym equipment to get big, or is it possible to do it with basic exercises such as squats and pushups? Do I need to buy any kind of protein supplements? How often should I work on my cardio?
Thanks for your time
The best thing you can do to start is spend a few days reading all the posts in this forum. There are a lot of experienced guys here who have been in the "game" a while and can help you. Be humble, and realize that no matter how big or bad you may get someday, you can always learn something from someone else.
As a general rule, you can build a powerful, big-ass physique using just a handful of basic "compound" exercises. Benching (flat dumbbell benching is best IMO), powercleans, deadlifts, squats, etc.
A couple thoughts for after you get the basics down... Don't "overthink" your lifting or try to get too "scientific". What I mean is, don't bother with doing fucktons of isolation exercises or worry about doing an exact percentage of your max weight for a given set (unless you're prepping for a powerlifting meet). A lot of beginners make that mistake, and they never get past stage one. Just go to the gym, lift until you feel like you're going to die, and don't leave the gym until you feel like that. Go home and eat, eat, eat, sleep like a bear in the winter, then get up and do it again. Make sure your technique is always good, but above all make sure the passion is there. The mind-body connection is pretty powerful, and you'll be amazed how big you can get if you really
want it. Don't worry about whether you are an "ectomorph" bla bla or any of that bullshit. That stuff distracts you from your goal and puts limitations on you that may or may not really be there.
Good luck.
