i first got panic attacks 12 years ago. I was in the hospital for 3 months having 17 hour a day panic attacks.  I got out of the hospital and still had them off and on for years.  Through self experimentation i have beat them, having one in the last 2 years but that was due to pneumonia.  The biggest factors in me beating them: I simply lost my fear of death, if I go I go, and thats that; I will never have sugar or caffeine on an empty stomach, and try to maintain a balanced insulin level with my eating; I stay VERY hydrated, drink tons of water, which I believe may be the biggest factor in beating panic; get 7-8 hours sleep; just dont let them own you, because they cant kill you, ever.

And I believe after heavy lifting the surge of adrenaline and hormone change is what causes "panic feelings", but is not an attack. I have experienced the exact same thing.

I started getting terrible anxiety about a year ago, and had 5 fucking panic attacks last nite.

It feels like someone kicked me in the balls, and can't breathe.

Gonna see the doc and hopefully get a script for some benzo's  Tongue

How do you bro's deal with this shit? and are there any OTC remedies to help?

-TIA

-TMM4U

Oh, and to keep this bodybuilding related. I get HEAVY attacks right after a heavy set of deads and squats  Lips sealed

That Sucks!  Sorry to hear about the panic attacks.   I had them many years ago... I know the feeling, "you can't breath, and you feel like you are going to die"!!!   Remember they are feelings, not fact!!!   Most times they are related to something traumatic, (i.e.) car accident, death of someone, eviction, etc... The onset is usually six to twelve months after the event.  Its a physical Post Traumatic Stress Response!!!   You can take something like an Rx. from your MD for anxiety, but you should try to assess what has, or is happening that would make you have the panic attacks....The most weird thing I found, is that the panic response most times is totally unrelated to the trigger event.   This is just my thoughts.   I do wish you luck with this matter.   Take care....

SSRI - Helps but will worsen the PA:s in the beginning of treatment. Serotonergic syndrom, depressions etc. ...

Benzo - Is the best against sudden attacks but very addictive.
Almost too good to be true - the Devil in a pill.
When the benzos are cleared out of the system the side-effect will be an "attack" much worse than the one you had before you took the pill.

So, you will end up popping pills all day...

There are a lot of people addicted to them.. be careful before you decide if it is worth the risk.

Try to find out what is causing the panic attacks before you go to the doctor as a lot of posters already adviced you to.

Damn good post.

I don't think a lot of folks realize just how scared of death they can become... even subconsciously. I think it could easily get worse as you get older, possibly more so during a "mid-life" crisis. Maybe even a fear of being alone.

I also stopped drinking coffee. I will have a Coke Zero now and then, but the Ass(partame) makes me leary too.

I don't mind time-released Guarana too much. Just a little dab l' do ya.

Balancing the insulin never became more important. I never eat foods that cause insulin spikes anymore. Lost a good deal of bodyfat because of it.

some ppl in my family get those.  I dont have time for those.  too busy working.

Drink some red wine, crank one out, and chill the F out.  Find out what it is you're stressing ,and either accept it or deal with it.

Do 30 mins of cardio almost everyday. Seems to reduce anxiety and depression. Scientific studies show that 30 mins of moderate cardio 5 days a week is just as effective as the antidepressant zoloft in reducing anxiety and depression without the side effects. The pharmaceutical industry would rather you on med$. Five to ten grams of fish oils a day.

Do you drink a lot of coffee? Are you on any stimulants? Fat loss supps? Something as simple as too much caffeine can cause panic/anxiety attacks. I had this problem years ago and reduced my caffeine intake and the problem was cured.

That's pretty funny... and true.

I recently picked up a real comfortable folding recumbant bike. I can do cardio while I play on the computer... whack off, whatever.

Im guessing you're american?

already know what meds you want.. even Before going to the doctor.

try to figure out the REAL reason instead.

I've had them. I realized I was overworked, overtired, and I was anxious as hell @ my mother in law... dig deep and ask yourself a lot of uncomfortable questions and truthfully answer them. Forget the drugs. They just mask and bury things temporarily. Solve the problem and it's done with for good and you're that much better off down the road for whatever obstacles come your way

Recently I hooked up my old PS2 next to my elliptical.  It's a Precor, so I don't have to hold the handrails on it....I've been playing Madden while doing cardio!  Works pretty well.

I'm thinking you can beat this panic attack you speak off. Just start doing cardio regularly and train a little harder. In Steve Reeves' book he said that men with big chests rarely get sick at all. So build up your chest, torso and lung capacity and this thing should go away. Try to build your chest to the 50-inch mark and keep your waist under 32!
