First off, the vote was anti-bush, not pro-obama. 

Second - McCain was a labeled a bush clone and it worked.  Without Palin McLame would have lost even worse.

But, the economic crash doomed McCain. It allowed Obama to go back to equating McCain to Bush and blame them both (and the GOP, in general) for the problems. Until that point, the Dems were still reeling from figuring out how to handle the Alaskan bombshell.

Because you vote for the TOP of the ticket. It's Obama vs. McCain.

Just like 2004 was all about Bush v. Kerry (who cared about Cheney or Edwards?).

Plus the GOP that sat this one out likely saw McCain as anything but a conservative. Remember that McCain rallys were as lively as watching grass grow, PRIOR to his selecting Palin. The conservative base wasn't behind McCain, before that lovely hockey mom showed up.
