Tipping
« on: November 23, 2009, 05:20:32 AM »
Regarding restaurants
I always tip well, unless the service is absolutely horrible
I know how hard server's jobs are
I do, however,
give a much better tip if the waitress is good looking
this somewhat proves that better looking people make better money

how do others feel about leaving gratuities?

I don't care if the girl's a solid 10, if the service sucks, or she's not attentive or something is wrong with the food (ie. cold) then she's getting $2.00 tops.

I always give about 30%.  I remmeber being poor, and when somebody tipped good, it made the whole day better.

however, there have been times when the server put her cig break or sitting with friends or texting above service.  At times like that, they choose to put you last, and you can't leave a ton then.

Very dependant on country, in Holland we tip depending on service. In the UK they often include a 12,5% tip in the bill for groups of 4+ persons, in which case I don't tip extra, unless service was outstanding.

IMO a waiter's wages should be tip independant, a tip should be extra.

I agree, that's the whole definition of a 'TIP' or gratuity, it shouldn't be added automatically, that's bullshit.

I don't give a shit if it's an unwritten standard (15% or whatever) if the service sucked then no tip.

I try to understand how often the servers get punished by it just being a slow restaurant, busy day, etc.... but if I feel the service is really bad, I have no problem giving them an appropriate tip.
Like 240 said, it can really make a difference in that persons payday.

If you're a good waiter, you keep the customer up to date. Customers can sympathise with a waiter working his arse off, but you have to keep communicating with your customers. Goes for any branch really. Keep people informed, a lack of information quickly annoys just about everyone.

esp important if you frequent a place regularly...and they know you....don't want 'em to fuck with your food

one point to understand:

TIP='To Insure Promptness'

that's what it stands for

so, if not prompt, maybe less of a tip

btw, and i hate to do the whole "ask the gay guy question about gay people" thing but, in relation to this thread, do gay diners catch on to when a straight male server is trying to subtly flirt with diners to get a better tip.

For example, when i used to wait tables and i knew the table was filled with gay guys, i would purposely flip a extra button off of my shirt or walk away in a way that i would make my ass more appealing

20% (which is often 40.00 or so.)  I give a higher percentage if I'm eating at a casual place,

LOL. Maybe in your constructed little world, but here on earth you've proven yourself to be an mess. But, please carry on; don't let a little thing like reality get in your way.  ;)

First of all anyone that does not tip even if they feel they got poor service is a fucking loser that should be eating at a fast food restaurants. Even if the service is poor you should at least leave 10%, don't forget that food was ordered for you, cooked for you, served to you at your table and cleaned up after you left, that is what the tip is for!!!

Secondly, my standard tip is 20%, however it can go up considerably if I get really good service. I have tipped as high as 50%, and it never hurts if its a hot (female) server that flirts with me.
