1- the bible was never written to be read literally
2-sure some parts happen to have some historically true bits
3- it is not possible from what we know about history to tell fact from fiction
4- so there is little point trying to filter out the true bits since they are completely interleaved with the fiction parts

in any case u should remember a famous story:

One day a physicist went to visit Niels Bohr - one of the creators of quantum mechanics. On the back of the front door he saw a hanging horse shoe and asked him do u really believe this gives u good luck ? Bohr said, well they told me u dont need to believe in it for it to work
