You can be an American citizen and not speak a word of English.  Not speaking English is not a crime in the US, and in many cases not even a requirement for US citizenship.  Unlike many other nations, the US has never had an official language.

I think that all long term US residents, citizens and non-citizens alike, should learn English.  My point is that just because somebody is Latino and doesn't speak English doesn't mean that he/she is illegal.

Well if an when it came down to it, and both of us were down on our luck, and there was a job picking worms at dawn and working 16 hrs a day that paid less than welfare... then you can pick worms and be proud... and I will  take the welfare, and have more money to feed myself and pay rent than you will have.

it's not about dignity it is about will & desire. that's something I wouldn't do... not that I'm willing to look down on those who do, ...it's simply a choice I would not make, ...just like escorting, bank robbing, drug dealing etc., there are things we'd be willing to do... and things we would not be willing to do, and if I had the choice to make more from welfare than from picking worms at dawn... I'd opt for the welfare.
