You want to save gasmoney?

How many hours/week do you plan on
spending fixing the car?

Not sure about that one, all fixed up still look a bit
odd and homemade.

If you want a project I think you should find a cooler base car to work on.
Maybe even just a frame and start building from scratch.
Like one guy made a Ferrari F40 replica 500hp
cost for the parts was 35-40K

Dude's goal was to build a M5 CSL after the 3.0 CSL "batmobile's" from the 70's, andit's a racecar...if you look at the 3.0, 3.5 CSLs you's see he got the look dead on, including the back
http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z13674/BMW-35-CSL.aspx

http://www.supercars.net/cars/3820.html

And since a M5 CSL didn't exist until BMW made a 1 off last yr for the 25 anniversary of the M5, his car is very unique.

Now, Dummy with the Ferrari, has no real Ferrari, it's a kit car, and Ferrari doesn't recognize it as a Ferrari F40...

As far as fixing, that would be a future endeavor, just wanted a car to have to roll in and keep my current car off the road for a while, it will go the distance, i'm just looking to save on upkeep.  You see that 5 series next to the race car, that is how I would like this car that I've seen look. I will take pics of it later...

A few hours ago today I was at a local foreign car garage that specializes in German (particularly BMW and Porsche). He has several cars out on the lot including a 2003 BMW M5 and various Porsche 911 Turbos, but what has really gotten my attention is a 1987-88 BMW (E28 chassis) 535i. It still has registration plates on it, and chances are it may need work. It's a manual, and looks the "beater" part. I'm intrigued by it, plus if it is good shape, I would rather drive that and save on gas. Good idea or no?
Sounds like you cant afford a new expensive car, so you're gonna try and look the part by purchasing a "beater" older expensive car

First off, Parker I DO know enough..how the fuck do you think I learned. I owned a lowered 66 vw bug with a 1835 in it when I lived in cali.
Mr. Shut your pie hole. I replaced a 12 year old car, went 8 years with no payments and FYI im already 4 months ahead on car payments, because I HATE not actually owning my car..so shut it.

I just dont think its worth the time or effort to buy a 23 year old car..Yeesh whats hard to understand..MEN you make it sooo complicated

your a fat lady who drives a beetle

I have a car that gets me back and forth to work that I own and a car that I really enjoying driving when I'm off of work.  I think this is the way all commuters should do it.

Maybe the title mislead you, maybe you misread, but I am still making payments on my Lexus. The car I do want comes out in 2011, I have been watching intensely of the developments, it's a M variant of the 1 series.
Now, the "beater" car is a old 5 series, it has the check list, RWD, sporty feel, and I like Inline 6s. The only real options from that time for RWD are Mustang, Camaro, Monte Carlo.

Also, I'm not into "wanting to look like I can afford something expensive", because it's a old BMW, I want something different, that's basically it.

And newmom, I never said you didn't know what you are talking about...

Funny, that's the front wheel drive ES300 from the mid 90s, it's based on the Camry. And actually it would be a good beater car or good second car, you should get it. In fact there is style called VIP or Bippi style in Japan and Cali in which it is influenced by Yakuza mobsters. They get mid 90s Lexus LS400s, Infiniti Qs, and lower them and put big wide rims on the, and they stretch the rubber. They get the exhaust slightly modified. It has a very clean, slick look.

I have a IS300...

I just sold my WRX and bought  2002 Jaguar xj8. Insurance is a fucking rip off, servicing and parts cost a fortune and fuel economy is woeful. Gotta love impulse buying  :-\ ;D Looks good though, and the leaper on the bonnet is cool.
No doubt about it...

I said beater, but remember what I said about "what it could become"?
A clean ass black e28 5 series with classic BBS wheels is the shit.
Also, I don't know what the deal is with it, like bigdumbell said, it could have lots of shit wrong with it.

But here is what someone did with that "piece of junk"...not that I would do this, it would defeat the purpose of saving money...

This is very badass, but have you ever built a real race car before?

Back in the late 90's i bought a 93 Mustang Lx 5.0 for 5k and dropped about 16k into making it a full blown race car and used to race it out at Texas World Speedway.

Buying a beater is one thing, but building a track car gets very expensive, very quickly, which i'm sure you are aware of. I drive a 97 Camry 4-door beater that gets about 26mpg, but at home in the garage i have a 01 Mustang Gt that has only 60k miles on it since i purchased it new. I'm about to sell the 01 GT and buy either the new 400hp Gt or a used Z06 Vette, not sure yet.

Beaters are awesome, i think everyone should have one. i purchased my 97 Camry for 6k 3 years ago and it only had 58k original miles on it, some old lady had it and never drove it. I can park it anywhere and not worry about it, unlike my mustang that is in perfect condition and hasn't even seen rain more than 10 times in the 10 years i've owned it.

Those old BMW's are cool, but they are expensive to work on and are usually money pits, but if you really enjoy working on cars i say go for it.

Thanks, and no, I've never built a race car before. But, that widebody CSL looks promising for a street car...

if you look at one of the pics, it has the widebody look with a reg street bumper.

At one of the locations where I work, people drive old 80's Mustangs or old Civics and race them. I've even seen one guy with half a car---no front fenders, bumpers, hood, just headlights and a engine up front

After the mustang was finished i drove it to work one day with no hood and parked it right outside my office window. I didn't take into account that the new intake was raised high enough to where the stock hood wouldn't shut anymore.  ;D

Building race cars is a blast, but an expensive hobby.
