My dog knows I am the boss, but I don't really do much to show I am the boss. As pack animals, they have an innate ability to very quicky ascertain who is the leader. And even in pack culture, if you look at wolves, other dogs sleep around the leader and keep him warm.

The times I might use a sterner voice are when we are walking and he gets near the road. I might shout "get off the road" and he know exactly what I mean. Another example might be if he is wet or muddy and tries to jump on the sofa - he know for sure what "NO" or "down" means.

To the guy who said its gross to have a dog on the bed, can I ask "why"? Is it any different to having a human on the bed? Seriously, what's the difference? Both are part of the family.

yeh, i see your point

but im not really about establishing dominance over my dog, i dont even like that word

i consider her more of like a friend, maybe a retarded friend........i cant tell that with my dog ( i dont even like saying MY dog ) that her sleeping on the bed is more about affection......you can tell by the way she cuddles into my girlfriend or my stomech like she is being protected

but i understand that with some dogs, if you dont establish dominance, they will start doind destructive shit and walkin gall over you

i just dont really witness it much, because there is just an implied dominance, she knows i am a male and knows she is weaker then me........she fucks with my GF (who is the true owner of the dog) a LOT more, casue she is  a girl

Gender is close to irrelevant when it comes to dominance in a dogs world. Both sexes can be dominant depending on the circumstances.

But I do understand your thinking and your dog is probably enjoying that relationship too but it doesn't see it the same way you do. It does things for other reasons than you might think.

You're the typical ignorant dog owner that like to think of dogs as some weird form of humans and not what they truly are, DOGS. Yes, some breeds have less of a tendency to try to be alpha sure, but I guarantee you, given permission even those dogs would take on a leader role. The instinct is always there which is not necessarily a bad thing all the time, use it to your advantage instead.

And just because you can command a dog to do something it doesn't mean it consider itself beta. Their mind doesn't work like that. Behaviorism and flock dynamics are not the same thing.

You don't become and alpha by putting dogs in cages. Are you retarded?

It's called anthropomorphize genius.  And no I don't think of my dog as a human being or with human characteristics.  However, I own a dog for companionship and they are like members of my family.  If anyone ever laid a finger on them I'd fucking kill them.  However, if I had to choose between saving the life of my dog or the life of a human being I'd save the life of a human being. So don't try to impress me with your canine psychological bullshit babble.  99.9% of dog owners own a dog for the same reasons as I do.  There is nothing wrong with letting your dog sleep in your bed or get up on couches.  My dogs are both well behaved and know their place.  In my opinion it's the fuck ups that treat their dogs like their little fucking robot slaves who get off on being master that are the ones to watch out for.  Maybe that's how you treat your women?  Now if I had a pitbull shit would be a different story for sure.  But most dogs don't need to be trained to that level.

My dog sleeps on the sofa. Never in the bed. He stands back when I answer the door and sits by the front door till I tell him to get in the car. However I don't believe in all this walk behind me bullshit. He returns when I can him and doesn't pull so why should I make him walk where I can stand on him. Weird. If you watch a pack of wolves they follow the.mother cause she knows where there going when they migrate. When they are in familiar surrounds they all wander everywhere exploring

I'm not saying that it shouldn't be allowed, just that in general you're better off by treating your dog as a beta. Some dogs still consider themselves beta even though they're given alpha privileges, but that is definitely not true for all of them. Good for you that you got your dogs under control but there are millions of dog owners out there getting frustrated at their dogs because they cause mayhem and act like spoiled little kids. Little do they know that it's pretty easily preventable if they just put down a little time in raising a well behaved dog. Yes I have owned dogs and no I don't get a kick out of being "in control". I do it because I actually care about the dogs wellbeing and making sure it doesn't cause trouble.

A well properly treated beta dog is usually in better mental health than most confused semi alpha ones.

Who are the fuck ups? The ones that got their dogs under control or the ones that constantly have to run around chasing their dogs to stop them from doing mischief?

All long haired dogs shed and stink, especially when they get wet.  Huskies and Malamutes are the WORST!  Those dogs fucking stink and shed like a motherfucking corpse.

my sister had a temporary brain shutdowmand got TWO huskies for first dogs. that was insane lol. Overall good dogs If you exercise them ALOT. You can really tell pulling is in their genes.
Thats the main problem I think poeple that have with "uncontrollable" dogs. they dont exercise them enough,

my friend had a long haired dog that didnt smell at all after you pet him, dont know what the race was though

I do - I love my dog and am fine with him jumping on the bed (provided he is clean and washed etc). But some of my friends (especially guys who don't have dogs) think its gross and unhygenic - what do you guys think?

I love dogs, but dogs should sleep in a little doggie bed beside your bed—not in your bed.  As someone else stated, man’s best friend is inherently unhygienic.  They do, and get into, lots of things that you never see.  Fleas aren’t the only insects that get into their fur.  Big dogs in particular should not be climbing onto your furniture.  A lap dog sitting on your lap for a few minutes is one thing, but that is as far as it should go.  How often do you take your dog to get groomed?  You say your dog has no “dog smell.”  I am certain that is not true.  Every mammal has a substantial smell—including your dog; you have simply grown so accustomed to it that you no longer notice it.  If you have carpet then those odors are in your house.  Again, you are simply inured to it.  Tile or hardwood floors can help minimize this depending on how often you mop your floors.  I guarantee that visitors or newcomers to your home notice the smell.  Have you ever lived on a farm?  It's the same dynamic; you don't notice what you smell every day.

I have dated a couple guys who let their dog sleep in the bed.  They were quickly crossed off my list.  I never told them why, but that was the reason—or at least one of thee reasons.  If the dog is sleeping in the bed, that is his space.  Do you want to sleep with a person or a dog?  Cats are much cleaner than dogs, but even they should not be climbing onto furniture or sleeping in your bed.  They belong in a little kitty bed.

You may have heard the phrase “love me, long my dog.”  I actually agree with this.  As I said, I am a dog lover, but dogs should not be sleeping in your bed.  :-[

You're a fucking moron. You equate a dog sleeping in your bed to the civil rights movement and women's rights?

thanks "oldtimer"

have anymore antiquated opinions for us.......

"Why a dog belongs outside in a coop."

"A women's place is in the kitchen."

"Coloreds belong in the back of the trolley."

I don't have a dog... But if I did,I would never let him/her sleep on my bed ,or couch.. I would never allow anyone in my home,or go on my bed with my shoes on..So why allow an animal.. People spit on the floor, and dogs and birds, piss and shit on the ground. Then you allow your pet to hop all over your bed?!

Both mine have their own dog beds which they love. They even have their own "bedroom" (the office), and of course have free reign of the house unless the baby is asleep.

people belong on couches and beds, dogs do not in my house. But im not the kind of person that freaks out if someone let their dogs in their beds or furniture. Everyone is entitled to their opinion....and it is how you raise your dog from the get go. Mine were never allowed on the furniture.....just my personal preference

My dog has never pissed or shitted inside. In fact, he is cleaner that many humans that you sometimes see living in squalor.

I got my dog from the SPCA, and he was living in pretty horrible conditions. Yet, he kept his pride, and made an amazing effort to keep clean, and look presentable (seriously). I think many cats and dogs are cleaner than some of the humans you see out there.

Bay - my comment was a bit harsh perhaps, but if you are considering disease risk, I dare say the risk of getting various types of diseases from a guy you are "sharing a bed with" is probably much higher than the risk of getting anything from your pet dog sleeping on your bed.

Your effort to analogize your dog in your bed with “gay sex” is rhetorically curious, at best.  If you want to talk about the unsanitary nature of sex (gay or straight) we can do that in the sex forum.  Having read your responses here it appears you were merely looking for people to agree with your lifestyle choice of sleeping with your dog.  So be it.  ::)
