Dude, ignore what these people are saying, I have had chronic insomnia for 15 years+, have spent thousands of dollars on 'treatment' and it was all a waste. Doctors don't really understand insomnia nor do people who don't have it. At the end of the day, the only thing you can do is deal with it. Actually, the best help I ever got for it was on getbig, guy told me all I can do is accept it and I have, so instead of wondering what life would be like if I slept like a normal human being, how much more energy and brain power I would have I just work with the limtation of chronic sleep deprivation. That is all you can, the sooner you accept your situation, the better. I truly hope this helps, no sarcasm. :)

Melatonin works but is habit forming. Everyone on here says it's good but it says right on the bottle that it reduces your immune system. That's not something to put in your body day after day.

I think the best thing for normal sleep is to run everyday. Always makes me sleep well.

Running is life.

I always drink a lot of caffeine before bed, in fact, I am drinking a Pepsi Max as I type this and I just ate a ton of refried beans.  Has no bearing on sleeping for me.  I will read for an hour or two and go to bed at 5 am.  The dogs will probably get me up around 12-2 PM.
It's interesting you say that. I would never try it just before sleeping at night, but I often drink a cup of coffee in the afternoon and catch a short nap immediately after.

I think most people have an incredible tolerance built up that we're not even aware of.

I bet if caffeine were highly regulated, our attitude would be completely different towards it. We might even consider it something like cocaine.

Spot on. Almost nothing beats a good pre-bed routine. Drugs work, but they're not the best option. Use them sparingly and cycle different drugs as to avoid dependency (both physical and habitual).

I have a habit of taking Benedryl before bed. Shit gets me nodding so quickly that my head's bobbing like a whore before I even notice. I can barely drag myself to bed and just wanna pass out wherever it happened to kick in lol
Yeah Benadryl works great, melatonin too.
