Thanks, trying to get to 30 reps, have done 25 before, deads are my favourite have been doing them religiously for 15 years. Without the straps I would have been lucky to get 10 reps.
I hate deadz....with a passion but I know they are a must... Im more of a push guy

Ben white isn't a particularly super strong deadlifter compared to his bench numbers

I understand the use of wrist straps for overall back fatigue in a BB-style workout, but in a strength battle such as in the video, if you cannot hold onto it, you can't deadlift it, period.

Poundstone is incredible. Just wish he'd not remain a police officer when he clearly uses.

The other week I finally performed a tight and controlled 10 reps with 500 (495 plus a 2.5 on each end, for all you exacto-critics) without wrist straps (alternate grip, though, obviously). I had perhaps another one or two in the tank, but decided, as I just wanted the 10, I'd spare possible injury and leave it at that.

Real men deadlift.

Great video!

Good lift...man
in a strength comp if straps arent permitted then it shouldnt be used
..but if u cant hold on to the weight  you cnt lift it... dont gree with that.. some people just have smaller wrists and less forearm
strength.  straps help you hold on to the weight so you can use tour body to perform the lift before your grip gives...

Deadz are a great mass builder. The have morphed my back into another dimension compared to where I used to be. Works sets lately are 405-6, and two sets of 455-3. I have pulled 500 for a single several times.

Fair enough. All I know is, my hands are not large by any means, and since ditching the wrist straps (after years of being a competitive bodybuilder and using them A LOT), my grip strength has gone through the roof. Now I can hold onto almost anything. Of course, it sucked for a couple of years. But you adapt to whatever you throw your body's way. I am proud of what I can hold onto now! LOL

(I do still use straps for most of my accessory work, though. I have found if I tax my grip too, too much, not only does their strength suffer, but I begin to develop claw hands. Yikes!)

I hear what your saying... but think of it this way no matter what you can hold on to without starps.. with straps you cand hold on to that little more.....

The difference is like guys being able to fuck a bitch without using viagra. Some people need viagra. The guys that don't use straps for deads are real men, like the guys that plow a bitch without viagra.

just to add I too pull 500 without strps but i find when i do i have to rest the bar and re adjust my grip... and on my finad rep the bar is literally falling from my hand.. whereas with straps i dont have to worry bout that.....
but really i thik its down to the individual really
same as some people use belts and wraps... Ive never used either EVER... again all down to the individual

Too big deal made out of strap use. In that deadlift contest it was probably decided that strap use is permitted so it was the same option for everybody. As I see it, deadlift isn't a grip exercise, far from it (and as far as I know hook grip is allowed in every powerlifting federation and in all strongman competitions and hook grip is basically the same as using straps atleast in events with short duration). But I also believe that the grip can be trained to the level that straps can be left out if the bodybuilder has enough motivation to do so.

As a back exercise, no, the deadlift is not a grip exercise. HOWEVER, as a movement designed to build overall strength and mass, it very much IS.

And how can you compare a hook grip with wrist straps?

One uses a person's hands, the other something that isn't a part of the body.

Well yes yes but maybe I'm that much into grip training that I don't see the deadlift's importance as a grip exercise. And if you want to have a good grip you have to train it with some variety, and when you do, do you need the deadlift anymore?

Hook grip vs straps, I don't know, the effect is the same. Not much to say about that.
