You can never count out the possibility of a jury that has already made up its mind prior to the case.
You would hope not... but the possibility always exists.
Hopefully the judge just throws it out based on lack of evidence (going by the prosecutors statement during the bail hearing), but I cant see that happening in a 2nd degree murder case.

Yeah, you're right. It wouldn't surprise me in the least. There was actually a column on Salon last week saying that, regardless of the facts, Zimmerman should be convicted in order to avoid riots.

youi also can't rule out the possibility that his story falls apart when they start talking the witnesses,  the friend Zimmerman supposedly called after the shooting, EMT's, Copsetc..   Nor can you rule out the possibility of him being convicted of neglient homicide (which I personally think would be fair)

and we as a society should have the opportunity to investigate and determine whether this guys claims are true or false

that is a lot different then taking his word at the scene of an event where he shoots to death and unarmed person and then get's to go home with no investigation or opportunity by the state to see if he is telling the truth or not

2.
