Good to see other dudes digging Cornell.

another entry from me, though not a vocal powerhouse...would be Thom Yorke from Radiohead, just because his voice is so pure and distinctive . and  they are just ridiculously talented and out there.

I listen to a radiohead song or two every day of my life

This is the best thing posted on Youtube.

Achtung was pretty peaky, too.

Achtung is the best album in their catalog.

and they have many incredible songs post joshua tree, just not as radio friendly:

One (maybe the best song ever)
mysterious ways
even better than the real thing
the fly
stay
lemon
please
gone
beautiful day
city of blinding lights
vertigo (which was a massive #1 hit BUT billboard wasn't including digi downloads at that point)

Bono only uses his voice to punctuate songs, if he wanted to be the focal point of the music, he could be (like most of the singers listed in this thread), but U2 are the consummate "band" and they all have their roles.  Soundgarden is about chris cornell, and he is amazing, no doubt.  U2 is all about one, singular sound, and are a much more "rhythm" based band.

This vid, and in particular, and bono in particular 410-450, showcase their rare abilities:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3e2f4bzumY" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3e2f4bzumY</a>

Another note, jeff and his dad tim buckley are amazing singers.

And marvin gaye was amazing and stevie wonder can still bring it. he sang for about 10 seconds at the grammy's this year, and sounded better than everyone else winning awards/or that was nominated. he has more talent in one finger than almost every artist performing today.

you know what's funny about the comparison of Cornell and Bono ?

During an interview , Cornell was asked about his skills as a guitar player, and he said " yeah when i was younger, I was impressed with virtouso muscianship and guys that played really hard stuff...but as you grow as a  musician and songwriter, you stop listening to Hendrix and check out what U2 is doing."

Great band, no doubt.

Miljenko Matijevic
Tony Harnell

TNT was once amazing. But for me, because of Ronni Le Tekro. Harnell is great (solo now, of course, and can't say I've heard his voice in years) but I always found him too high.

You should define the term 'greatest' and some of these singers people are posting are metal, not rock. If you want to get into the metal arena most power metal or classic metal singers can blow away virtually any rock singer with their technical abilities, but that's the nature of the music. I'm speaking in terms of technical ability.

Daniel Heiman

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5lXZEawufc" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5lXZEawufc</a>

I agree. While metal is a form of rock, it's unclear whether we're including heavy metal singers.

As well, are we factoring in charisma, stage presentation and uniqueness?

Regardless, Daniel, once of the amazing Lost Horizon (and a few other cool groups), is a freak singer.

bono - shit vocalist. u2- over-rated band with a guitarist who relies far to much on effects. The only positive i can say of them is they have a decent rhythm section.

boner aside, some great names mentioned in this thread.

Mercury is numero uno. I've never seen the big fuss with Robert Plant. I'd take Ian Gillan over him to name but one.

Chris Cornell is probably th ebest of the last 20/30 years. I caught Soundgarden at a festival earlier this month and he was still sounding good. A great, distinctive voice on him and the whole band were tight.

I think when it comes to rock bands, the hardest thing to find is a real good vocalist. I've seen/heard a lot of good guitarists, bassists and drummers in local/small time bands, but i can count on one hand the number of outstanding vocalists.

While metal is a form of rock, it's unclear whether we're including heavy metal singers.

If that's the case:
Rob Halford (Judas Priest) Dude still has it.
Dio (Rainbow/Black Sabbath/Dio)
Geoff Tate (but Queensryche is horrible these days)
Jon Oliva (Savatage)
Midnight (Crimson Glory)
Ray Adler (Fates Warning)
What the hell, throw Ozzy in there, too. Dude still can rock.

P.S. Never even heard of Lost Horizon.

Tate was ousted from QR and quite frankly, it's about time. He turned QR into a horrible alt-pop band.

New QR singer is from Crimson Glory, go figure. Called themselves Rising West till they announced giving asshole Tate the boot. They're going to record new material and go back to their metal roots.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS20WkSglZ0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS20WkSglZ0</a>

Here's one of the best singers you've never heard of. The part after the solo is crazy.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_Kh_Zbt-Dk" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_Kh_Zbt-Dk</a>

Fast Forward to 5:40 or so on this one.....damn!

Yngiwe, I usually stay on top of the metal news but totally missed that Tate is out of Q-Ryche. Wow. Just read a few articles. We'll see how it goes. Something had to change. They have sucked for too long.

And, wow, that unknown dude definitely has some pipes!
