Just wondering why people actually believe this?

Why would he have a workload substantially higher than any other top-level athlete?  And don't tell me you think top-level athletes really "spend 5 hours a day" doing hardcore training?  Genetic tip of the iceberg or not, we're all still humans.  Never has there been anyone born, and barring bizarre genetic experiments, never will there be anyone born, who would actually get benefits from balls to the wall, calorie-destroying 5hr a day workouts...

Phelps is basically a sprinter... in water.  Does anyone believe usain bolt packs down 10000 calories, or even anything close to that?  The dude claims he eats chicken nuggets all day before the race, LOL.  At least he's honest.

Phelps probably is in the pool five hours a day or more... doing a sprint every now and then. it's not like he's marathoning around the pool.  Plus the dude is like 6% bf.  I'm sorry but the 10k figure each day is completely made up.  Yes, I'm aware in interviews he admits as much, but he still says "well i shoot for it every day, but rarely get there" (at least in the interview i read).

In my opinion, he doesn't really know what he eats, he just eats a lot, probably comes out to 5-7k...

Lucidity and sanity in one post. Nice.

I wasnt claiming his workload is any greater than other elite athletes, just that its beyond anything that you or I could comprehend (unless you're an Olympic Athlete, which I doubt).
To me, 7k is an insane amount of food.

dont swell yourself short, are you saying phelps is twice the man you are? or even 25 percent stronger or what are you really saying?

hes just a lean kunt who was probably always active even as a child had lots of kids to play with and never got fat

atleast usain bolts gets us closer to the truth (lots of sleep and tv, relaxing and some chicken nuggers)

Phelps is basically a sprinter... in water.

Swimming is much more aerobic than running at the same distance.  His shortest race is the energetic equivalent of about the 400 meters in track, which is technically a sprint, but it's the longest one.  His other distances would be like the 800 and 1500 in track.

Nobody's ever been simultaneously the best at the 400/800/1500 in track.  One guy has won gold in the 400/800 in one Olympics.  Guys have won three distances in one games though (Paavo Nurmi, Emil Zatopek).

yep.  i don't see what could be so "unimaginable" about his workouts.  in this day in age, there is plenty of training footage of professional athletes across a variety of sports posted all across the internet.

the inescapable conclusion:  it's about what you're born with, not your ability to drive yourself into the ground with gruesome training.  people who try, fail.  but god bless the "hard worker" who at least "gave it his all" ::)

Right, but still, we're talking about races that are done in what, under 3 minutes?  It's not like he's non-stop just flying back and forth across the pool for hours on end during his training, haha.

everyone is trolling on a saturnday adonis even claimed 315 on the incline bench for 6 reps at his peak last saturnday, you dont even see jay hittting that weight
That wasn`t my peak Johnny as the power to weight ratio is not very good there.

As I said, I weighed a fat 235 lbs.  315 for 6 at 235 is horrible by any good lifter standards.  You and I both suck at lifting because we have long arms and limbs.

I ran track for 6 years in addition to swimming.  Swimming is much more difficult and the practice is not a sprint every now and then.  Its lap work and duration for the most part.  MUCH MUCH more difficult then track.

You oughta go and find a college swim team and ask to practice alongside them and then make your judgement call.  You will need at least 4-5000 calories minimum to make it through and be able to perform the same the next day.

adonis i still say you are full of shit or rather full of thomas jefforson salad pie by claiming you did 315 on the incline for 6 at a bodyweight of 235

i think even the strongest juiceheads at the gym would find that an impressive feat

http://sg.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/balancedliving/michael-phelps-squashes-those-12-000-calories-per-223817970.html

Competitive swimmer Michael Phelps rose to fame after winning a whopping eight gold medals in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing (that was after picking up a not-too-shabby four during the '04 games), and the world suddenly took an interest in all things Phelps, from his devoted mom to his dating life to the number of calories the 6'4" super athlete consumed. But as for those reports that the Baltimore native, now 27, consumes 12,000 calories daily (including full pizzas and two dozen eggs) daily to fuel his rigorous training schedule, well, it's not true … not exactly, anyway.

"People make a big deal out of what I eat, but it's not that crazy. I had a three-egg omelet and three pieces of French toast and coffee this morning," he tells Details magazine. "For recovery, I think it's a big deal to eat within a half-hour after you exercise. Otherwise I just try to put carbs into my system before I swim and then load up on the protein after. I don't count calories. Whether it's Sour Patch Kids or Reese's or a bag of chips, if I feel like eating it, I'm going to eat it."

That's a huge range though my brother... HUGE.

That's like saying my car gets between 15 and 45 miles to the gallon... not much to go on.

swimming is a joke. there should be 100m freestyle and that's it. not medleys, variations, butterfly, backhand, cockstroke etc .. the amount of gold medals is ridiculous

and no way he eats anywhere close to 12000 calories.

he is 6'4 195 lbs

i remember the one time i smoked rock for like 3-4 days straight and eating nothing only some meat i struggled to get down to 203 pounds or so at 6feet6, that was eating nothing and smoking rock after dieting really hard previously, i just wanted to try it and get high, but after a few nozebleeds and the rediculous amounts of epic leans i acheived just seemed like satans trickery at the time. Perhaps Michael Failps is a peice of shit rock head
