I live in a City of a million people and the oil & gas sector is the main driver of the economy here.  When the recession hit here in early 2009 a lot of oil & gas companies had to postpone or cancel projects.  They laid off a lot of positions, Engineers, Geologists, and a lot of IT people.  To this day the oil & gas sector hasn't come back to it's former boom.  It's growing, yes.  But not like it was pre-recession.  There are plenty of IT people here still without decent paying jobs due to supply demand.  There is a need for certain amount of tech people everywhere, yes.  But that doesn't mean all of the qualified people will find work in a recession.

But there is the rub... you're saying your city doesn't have any jobs... and that's fair enough, but people can move if need be.

Go where the jobs are... That's sometimes what you have to do.

I've only ever met one person who's worked in a genuinely recession proof industry. She was a sales rep for a company that made ball bearings of all things. And they've never, ever had a bad year for sales. Forget your IT positions that need constant upgrading of skills. Get in on selling the most unsexy product of all - but a product that will always be in constant demand. She admitted that it was ridiculously easy to meet her targets every year. It's just something that no one ever thinks of as a career.

lol a longer while back he posted that he rents an apartment for $600/month and moved to Canada from Europe due immigrants taking jobs away.  Now about a year or so later he claims he has a house that's fully paid off  Roll Eyes
One doesnt generally buy a house the second they get here.

Not that I dont hate the shit, but 200 grand hardly makes one rich, he probably got out of a over priced market in paris who knows.

If hes in canada which I think he is, there is no where for him to go, alberta was the heart of the economy of this country, and it aint doing great.

Had it my job in the Internet industry. Constantly tied to work through email and crazy hours.

But, this market is the worst I've seen since getting out of college in '92.

Would love a change, but pickens are slim our there!

I couldn't imagine being a kid coming out of college now, all wet behind the ears.

Haha! Yes, polymers. While not a sexy industry (in the 60s), Mr. McGuire understood the future, open-ended possibilities.

Mr. McGuire. *squeek*

That 'Hopperman' award.

I think IT and Medical careers definitely qualify as recession proof jobs. What's your take. By the way G4P isn't included into the list!

- Discuss

IT is one of the first places hit when layoffs are being planned.

Medicine is completely prone to the recession as Corporations reduce or cut benefits, private medical practices see rapid decline in patients, hospital census is down.  People do the bare minimum medically speaking and only companies like Tylenol continue on strong since people opt for an OTC fix.

The most recession proof career around is health care....its why I went back to school for my degree in Health Care Management.  Its also why I sell health and medical products.

The fact is that people will always need it and there are always jobs available

Exactly.  I've worked in 4 countries over the last 8 years working in film.  Gotta go where the work is.
