Haha, nice joke. As polling consistently shows, the majority of Americans fall along more moderate lines than most of the Dems in Congress.
Don't let you partisan blinders dictate what you see. The majority of Americans fall along more moderate lines than most of the dopes we have up in Congress. Even when stirred into a partisan frenzy by pundits the fact is that most of us still fall in the somewhere between slightly-left and slighty-right, very often depending on the particular topic that's in question.
If this wasn't the case, then why are Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, the two leaders of the Dems in Congress, also the most hated members of said Congress (as polling shows)?
There's plenty of reasons why that would be observed, beyond the simple fact that Pelosi and Reid are dumbasses. A big one might be the fact that they are the public face of the Democrats in Congress, and they are the ones most often attacked by pundits, which raises their profile substantially; couple that with the fact that most Americans are unlikely to be able to name more than a handful of members of Congress beyond Reid, Pelosi and Boehner, and it becomes quite evident why the effect you describe might be observed.
Besides with the approval ratings of Congress as low as they are does it really matter? Americans have disdain for anyone up in D.C. right now.
