This is a movement i never see being used...OK could be different in the US and UK. I normally like the feel of Dumbbells for this movement but i think i will experiment with rear Barbell shrugs next chest/back workout. Maybe front BB shrugs and then rear BB shrugs a bit like front and rear delt presses for shoulders and could maybe give a more thourough workout.. opinions??

Behind the neck feels a bit awkward for me at least.
From the front I sometimes use a wider grip, like olympic snatch lift.
Don't really see/feel any difference in results? Normal grip from the front allows most poundages though.

he's talking about shrugs... not presses i switch in rear barbell shrugs every other workout...i like them when i feel like shit because i can use less weight but get a good strict trap squeeze

The extra wide (collar to collar if possible..different kind of stretch for the traps), middle and close grip (6" apart) have caused some very good improvement for a lot of Bb'ers. Two sets each , 8 to 12 reps, all in the same trap workout. Don't know why people never seem to experiment with different hand spacing/grips on so many standard exercises, like the simple shrug. Could make a exercise you get nothing from into something special for a lot of guy's, just by a simple grip change.
If read shrugs work for you, than great..though some find it a very limiting exercise.
Best trap experience would be power cleans or Hi-pulls, bar none. Thick, full development..no doubt. Good Luck.

Yeah he did. I tried them after seeing him doing them in a mag years ago. I didn't like them.

I first saw them when Lee Haney was doing them many moons ago, and I will alternate them with regular shrugs. But on the Smith Machine I can change my angle and foot position, but you want to go for higher reps than weight.
