Rush is Canadian Zeppelin.

I have seen Rush live 14 times.  Rush fans are brand loyal......like NASCAR fans.

Zep was great for the 10 or so years they were a band. Pioneers of the huge drum sound on tape and other guitar and vocal recording trickery. Yes, they ripped off some blues songs but their versions had character and energy and they added some things like Indian flavored scales and mystical lyrics. Lots of anthemic tunes but no gas left in the tank by '80. Page's band The Firm and Plant's 80s solo stuff is pretty good but none of it would have worked being called Zep. Masters of marketing for not getting back together. Big Zep fan but tired of hearing Whole Lotta Love and the other more common songs on the radio....just burnt out on them.



Rush? Now at it over 40 years, can still play the old prog stuff and are still making good music. Huge body of work. More original musicianship, more nuanced and intricate playing style and it can't be said enough that their lyrical content is about 30 IQ points higher than Zep lyrics. Are they better as far as being legend? Nope.

I can guarantee you that they could play every Zep song though...Zep couldn't play 90% of Rush tunes...

If the two bands were bodybuilders, Zep would be Arnold and Rush would be Ferrigno, except that I would actually pay $20 to see Rush.

You would be better of comparing Ratt to Dokken


Or Black Sabbath to Blue Oyster Cult


Or Heart to Pat Benatar


Led Zeppelin really cannot be compared to any other bands. Nor can the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix or Van Halen.



Yes, music and your preferences are subjective, but let's stick to reality here.


Some of these bands are/were at a level that could not be reached. Rush was not one of them. Led Zeppelin was.


Now, if you wanted to compare guitarists you might compare Jimmy Page to the guitarist from Ten Years after.


Randy Rhoades to Yngwie Malmsteen? Not so much, maybe Yngwie to Jason Becker.


Jeff Beck to Stevie Ray Vaughn... maybe.

I think Kashmir is another good one. Jimmy Page is a genius regardless of what people say. Even the musicians who criticize him can't actually play his songs correctly.

Makes no sense.


I gotta throw Aerosmith in their also. They are highly underrated.


"Seasons of Wither" kills me every time I listen to it, and they are still going strong.
