Bro-Science: Pullups are better than Lat Pulldowns
« on: February 26, 2013, 06:57:39 PM »
I can do a lot of pullups and usually use 75 lbs strapped to myself for a few reps even.  However, Lat Pulldowns are superior and I feel them much more than Pullups.

Yes I agree.  I've never been great at pullups myself though.

Depends what you weigh too? lol

I weigh 230....

And our lat pulldown machine goes up to 260!

I love doing wide grip pullups, and they always seem to be more challenging than doing maximum weight on the pulldown machine!

Nothing irritates me more than stepping foot in a gym where they don't have a proper bar for doing pull-ups.

Fuck lat pull downs. That is for women ... and fat people in training until they can do pull ups.

I feel the exact opposite.  for overall strength, I feel pullups are superior and they are one of my favorite exercises.

Yup!  Ditto!

I switch it up some weeks I'll go in and do 6 sets of pull ups, some weeks I'll go in and 6 sets of lat pulldowns!  But do feel the pullups are superior - especially for overall back width!

I usually burn out my strength on pullups, and end the workout with some concentrated lighter pull downs.  I like pulldowns especially because even after I do deadlifts I feel pretty fresh on them, like they hit a whole other part of the back region.

pullups are superior to lat pulldowns, if you can do a pullup/chinup. LPD are still a good excercise but not better.

for me pull ups give best pump and soreness after.

maybe you should try full rom,you know
Its impossible for me not to go full ROM due to my long arms.  I go ALL the way down and ALL the way up.

I am very, very good at pullups and can do 20+ easily all the way up and down, no swinging in one set.

I don`t get any pump even when doing that though.  Could be because I have done at least 50 pullups every single back work out for years and years now.

Lat Pulls give me an insane pump though and are more difficult as I can adjust the weight greatly.

why bother? you're part orangutan so you're going to be good at both movements and (also because you're part orangutan) you'e never going to have any appreciable back development to show for it.

I do get a laugh when I see Midgets struggling with Pullups.  Short people are abysmal at them.

Does anyone have anything other than Bro-Science to back their claims up of a Pullup being "better" than a Lat Pulldown?  ???

Pullups are a joke for me.

I feel lat pull downs in my lats when I stay pretty vertical. I noticed most put the pin near the bottom and do this rocking version where they lean back far almost to the point where it becomes a row instead of a pulldown. Pullups are superior but truth most are not strong enough to do proper sets of chins. Going dead hang and going all the way up, most guys couldn't do sets of ten. Doing kips and a short range of motion isn't as effective for lats as a full range lat pulldown.

Yeah I Dead Hang and even pause with my arms fully extended when I do pullups.  Still they are a breeze and I don`t get much out of them.  I have adapted to them as I can` remember doing a back workout without doing them.  :-\

I also installed an INCREDIBLY thick bar to do pullups with to make it more difficult.  The thinner the bar, the easier pullups are to do.  Still, its child`s play.

Lat Pulldown is so much better.

Does anyone have any proof that a Pullup is better or is it just more Bro-Science being spouted?

I go up to 75 lbs for 5-6 reps and could probably do more but its hard to fit much more than that comfortably.  I usually do 3 sets of 12 with 25 lbs, then I do 1-2 sets without any weight and I won`t count reps.  Its usually a good number though as its sort of a trick to go from heavier weight to nothing and it makes it seem much, much easier.

this thread seems a lot less self-congratulatory and expresses genuine curiosity.
