You're lucky to have known them back in the day. I'll bet they were cool to hang out with and crazy to lift with. I remember as a kid seeing them in the mags wearing lumberjack clothes in the gym and lifting crazy weights. Which one was the strongest?
I hung with them several years past their juiced prime. Peter was always the smaller of the two. “Smaller” being a relative term here. As well, I believe David was a degree stronger, too.
Funny stories with these guys.
One time one was literally stepping onto the side of the other’s face as he was benching around 500 pounds. He’d gotten stuck on a rep and the work boot crush was intended to motivate the completion of the repetition.
Or one screaming for the other to hit him as hard as he could prior to a set to ramp up the intensity. This was ongoing, with each assaulting the other, and it pushed Mike Christian, who was training in the vicinity, over the edge. He stormed over and hammered the brother in the face as hard as he could. (And this was Mike at his biggest, mind you). The brother goes flying, knocking over benches, and landing in a heap. Instead of being angered, he gets straight up, beams a giant smile, bellows the infamous howl the brothers would routinely make, and then proceeds to do his set in an animal frenzy.
Christian just shakes his head and walks away.
Or the time they were driving their Jeep with oversized (and illegal) tires on the L.A. freeway. The cops pulled them over, and, seeing the two behemoths hop out out of the vehicle, immediately call for backup, fearing a serious situation was about to happen. Within minutes, the officers were laughing at the brothers’ hilarious (and constantly good-natured) antics.
Or Bob Kennedy telling me how he’d witnessed one of the bros simultaneously stabbing each quad with a loaded syringe. In the middle of the gym. Through jeans.
I have endless stories about The Barbarians.
