hey viking  could  you share with us more of your convos with mike, i read also he went super low in calories

Sorry, missed this, busy with writing papers etc. He told me he did go super low in calories- 800 in the last weeks before a contest, but he dieted strictly like that for 6 weeks, otherwise he generally tried to stay fairly defined, but ate more to maintain it and grow. Didn't believe in force feeding nutrients. I will write more if there is still an interest.

Arnold came back and didn't look atrophied, he might have been down in size but the quality was still there,  his lines, mass, development and proportions still dominated.  Even now he doesn't look atrophied, just scaled down, still has the big arms, chest and calves

The only body part that somewhat regressed that year was his quads. I think it had to do with the short time he trained rather than actual muscle deterioration. In the end he was still the best up there that day.

Arnold wasn't HIS best in 1980 (he was in 74), but he still was THE best in 1980.

Lol, and there's still people that say he looked like shit and it was a blatant robbery... Arnold looked great, not at his best and most massive but still far above the competition, he was the winner fair and square, for sure not the 5'7 blocky Mentzer with a distended midsection...

Mike Mentzer was 5'8". His brother Ray was an inch taller at 5'9".

I just don't think he had the time to add the size but didn't look atrophied as in old or damaged.

228 lbs at 6'1"  never seemed so big .  at the height, the average bodybuilder would need to be at least 245 lbs to match his size .

And Kevin Levrone claimed to be 243 pounds at 5'9" at this years Mr. O with NO legs...haha

x2 and if Arnold continued to improve, say come in at 255-60 in the same condition, which I think he could have done, he would have beaten Haney as well. He literally could have held the title for 15 years or more if it mattered to him. He was only 34 in 1980 and could have gone on well into his early forties like Zane, Dickerson and Dex did.

He was 33 in 1980 (born in 1947).

sadly, the videos and photos from 1971 are rare and bad quality

Arnold won it unopposed; therefore J Weider didn't feel like printing pictures of the show under such circumstances.

Yup, he reportedly weighed 265 pounds (his heaviest ever) in preparation for the 1971 Mr. Olympia.

Exactly! he retired  in 1975 the top names back then were Oliva,Ferrigno,Katz ,Waller etc all over 240 lbs...the following years  Arnold got off the sauce, his skin was really lose for a 30 year old guy 76,77,78, specially 1979,And don't forget,by 1980 the game had changed drastically, Zane,Robinso,Dickerson,Makawi,Mentzer etc were the ones dominating  "were ripped" and under 220 lbs... So by spring 1980 not only Arnold got lean but his skin was thinner than ever!!! with striations never before seen in his prime even the split chest...... I really doubt it was the same "Formula" he applied 10 years early the early 70's.
