So I went kayaking in upstate Ct. on Saturday.
It didn't sink in what I was getting myself into when I heard that no one was allowed on the river the weekend before because the water was too fast and high after all the rain we've been getting.
So I leave my jeep jump in the shuttle and off I go.It's a 10 mile float/paddle down the river.
so the first 3/4's is chill.I paddle when I want, lay back in the kayak with my shirt off and my life vest as a pillow.
I see some white heads and put on my life jacket...sure enough I get spun sideways hit a rock and flip..I'm in a sit on top kayak so I end up in the water.first thing they tell you is to lay on your back and float until you can get out of the river.so of course I immediately try to stand and get knocked down and dragged over some rocks. not to bad, I quickly get back in my kayak {my friend grabbed it and was holding on to some overhead branches}...go down a little farther and flip again.this time it's a little more painfull.cut my knee and my side...get back in go a little farther and flip for the third time in the roughest part of the river.
scratch myself up real good this time.I couldn't get to the kayak.everytime I tried to swim or sidestroke I'd get lit up...so I had to float down the river on my back waiting to bounce into the next rock and hoping I didn't break anything....after about 15 minutes of this I finally get to shore where hypothermia kicked in and I shook uncontrollably for 10-15 minutes...I lost the paddle,my shirt, and flip flops.
laying there I hear cars above me so I trek up through the woods to the road and somehow I'm right in front of the place where I left my jeep.I went in took my keys and told them where to find the kayak and I had no idea about the paddle.....I went home and took a painful shower, had 2 beers and some food and was in bed by 5 pm....great times!
