Yes. I miss all the old muscle mags.

Same, I remember getting excited to go pick up the mags monthly.

Steve was a nice fella.

One day he was browsing the magazine rack in a store, started into a brutal heart attack, began to pound his chest, loudly saying, No! No! No!, then fell over, dead.

And that was that.

I remember that too. It would be January before the Olympia results came out in mags. I know it’s probably hard as fckn hell for younger dudes or guys newer to BB, but we REALLY wouldn’t know who won for months!

The speed at which information is distributed is insane compared to just 25 - 30 years ago. Kids nowadays literally have all of the world’s knowledge at their fingertips and can access it in seconds.

I remember doing research for reports and taking days, weeks, and even longer if the library had to order books for me. Today those same 2–3 week research papers could be done in one evening.

I watched some of Greg's training video on YouTube.

I have no doubt he was a very strong guy, but the way that video was edited was laughably deceitful.  It showed him Smith incline pressing a decent weight (maybe four plates/side?), but nothing extraordinary, and certainly not for a purported "giant."

Then, they shot from an oblique angle when more plates were added over the course of a couple of sets.  Five plates, then maybe six?

At that point, the camera zoomed in to a tight shot of Greg pressing again.  You couldn't see the additional plates from that perspective, and it was obvious that the editor just recycled the footage of him from the previous sets -- sometimes even looping reps from the same fucking set!

I wonder if our good Fortress had the opportunity to train with Kovacs.  I know Robert said he was gigantic, dwarfing even an off-season Nasser.

Tangentially, the honourable Mr. Fortress did train with Nasser once and, as I recall, Rob was shocked at how weak El Sonbaty was for his size..."struggling with 315 inclines," I believe.

Knew Greg. He was an acquaintance.

Ate meals with him and such.

Lots of misinformation in this thread.
Did you see him in gym or at least talk about training?
Any truth to strenght claims and if yes was Strongman ever talked about.

Come to think of it Strongman was in a quite a low point around the same time though…

Hahaha - no shit. I would have had blisters on my cock if porn was as readily available back then as it is now.
Remember in the back of the magazine store ( or video rental) they would have “the room” - lol.

Some hotel room shots of Greg Kovacs at the 2004 Arnold Classic. I'm curious why that second shot was taken.  ???

I'm not sure if that last photo is also from 2004, but it looks like it was from around that time. Leading up to that contest, Greg/Chad only released back photos of Greg where he looked impressive. Admittedly, at 335-lb, he still dwarfed everyone [including Bob Cicherillo and Mustafa Mohammad]. But even though he came into the contest in shape, he was not able to get his "look" back [like he had at the 1996 Canadian Nationals in the video below]. I guess Dave Palumbo was good company for Greg to have, as Greg seemed to have Palumboism in the later parts of his pro bodybuilding career.

im not sure but he's about to hit a side chest(can tell by foot/leg positioning)

I Im not sure why that cameraman is taking pics like that but yeah

Thus far to date, I've never had any health test that wasn't in the optimal range. So now I sort of have a fetish for keeping it that way. It's sort of the same reason why I don't make love to a woman in the ass - in part because I don't want to, but also in part to sort of keep a streak going.

My health results didn't change going from 170-lb to 200-lb...although I'm sure I'm slower now, and perhaps my heart is more taxed than it was when I was lighter.

That said, if John Goodman could literally "bulk up" to over 400-lb again for the movie 10 Cloverfield Lane [!] at age 62 [true story - he brought his weight up to over 400-lb to look recognizable as himself for the movie], then I probably shouldn't worry about being over 200.

^ Sheesh...I can't believe he's almost 72. Dead by 80!

Although to be honest, I'm satisfied with a sub-200-lb body weight. It does make it harder to keep my lifts up...but I don't have body dysmorphia or anything. I think it's fine to be small.

Although you are correct that I am afraid of causing myself health problems, and that has directly impacted my progress [by not eating enough].

But I always thought - you never know if you could be that one guy who ends up getting a heart attack young because of genetics! You know?
300lbs fat is alot healthier than 300lbs muscle.

first of all you have to use alot of drugs to get to 300lbs of muscle. Second of all muscle requires oxygen, and alot of blood volume, which obvoisly is a massive burden for the heart.
at older age a heart can not keep up with that burden.

Fat is just there, stored fat, it's not oxygenated. thus not a direct strain on the heart.

That's the story I heard too long ago, felt the heart attack, tried to fight it a bit, stumbled to try to get to the door, and went down flat.

Neece young -

.

.

One funny story about Steve is that he apparently tried hustling to support his bodybuilding dream back in the late 60's, 70's. David Carter, the guy that was involved in the Ric Drasin porno, wrote about him in the book "The Iron Game" under the fake name of "Moby". He got sent home by buyers, and quickly gave up that hustle.

I'm pretty sure Ken Sprague mentioned it years ago also too on IronAge or Iron History.

Since it popped into my head (and I might want to remember it), here's the genesis of the big Duchaine / Neece fight that went on in the late 90's. I remember it was interesting because Neece, Mentzer, and Duchaine all had words at separate times about Duchaine's shit starting proclivities, and they'd all be dead within about 1 - 1 1/2 years of each other -

" Since I’ve wandered into the subject of abuse, I’ve gotten another muscle writer pissed off at me, this time MuscleMag’s Steve Neece. Steve lives near me with his mommy, and he also trains at the same gym I do. Steve and his mom are really close. I know this because when Steve went to Don Ross’ funeral and attended the post   service buffet, he brought doggie bags (or were they “mommy bags”?) to take food home to her. Steve has this belief that I’m abusive to women because I’ve been disrespecting women’s bodybuilding of late and because I think it’s a dead-end sport.

Now here’s a hoot of a story: after his reporting about that “abusive Dan Duchaine,” Steve shows up at the biggest magazine store in San Diego, fishing for leads for gossip, as he knows I’m friends with the owner of the newsstand. So Mikel, the owner, figures he’s gonna yank Steve’s chain and tells Steve that his article backfired, and I am now inundated with sexual offers from tons of women. Completely fabricated, obviously so, because a) I adore all women and most of my closest friends are females, and b) I don’t play the field as I like to be a one-woman man. Now get this: in the next issue, Steve reports the fabricated story verbatim.

How did all this really start? Let me tell you: on a day-to-day basis, I’m probably the least interesting personality in bodybuilding. Years ago, I used to train in a T-shirt with this on it: “Sex is nobody’s business except the three people involved.” But now I sleep in a much smaller bed, so I must have calmed down.

A few months ago, Steve Neece wanted to prove to Shawn Ray (and the world) that female bodybuilders have the ability to make men’s dicks hard and shot a picture of a lineup of fabulous bare fannies. So who’s pissed off now? Not me, I like the idea of being in the middle of an ass sandwich. But ask most women if this were helping women out and they’ll probably say they’re pissed off with Steve.

Where was I? Oh, months ago, I implied that most of the female bodybuilders who wrestle are borderline prostitutes. Why is this? You decide. In a private hotel room, a female bodybuilder in a thong and no top is wrestling a schmoe, and he gets aroused, and his dick gets hard. And he asks, “If I pull my dick out and give you two hundred extra dollars, will you jerk me off?” Most of the time, the female bodybuilder does it and takes the money. I would say that 90% of the time, this is what’s happening in a private wrestling match. "

Was given the word the next morning upon my arrival at work.

Yes, worked out around him, several times.

He was monstrously strong, but the exaggerations are considerable, as well.

Greg NEVER had a thought to compete in strongman.

Fat is hard on your heart...I do understand what u are saying but if u have 200lbs of fat your heart is pumping hard to move the weight. That's why obese ppl breath hard walking across the room. Their hearts become enlarged as well

No doubt they'll take the money to fuck. If she'll sit on your face while "wrestling" for money it's not that big of a leap to go farther.

it's unhealthy aswell in the way that you get unhealthy clogged arteries and you have to carry extra wegiht which is heavy on your joints etc. But I still think it's healthier. 300lbs of mucle will not live past 60, show me one.
