Was thinking it would be best to hedge things as much as reasonably possible, and to make it as competitive as possible.

A contest that would hold the most suspense and have the most interest would probably be a legitimately scrutinized natural competition, but who knows. No way to make everyone happy, I'm sure of that.

Not sure about this part. That's the reason for the panel. If a guy appeared like the one Snoman referred to, there would be lots of pressure against him from the panel as well as the board members. That would be the most interesting part of the contest, and you never know what might come out of that stage (someone could get busted lying, etc). Worst case scenario is a legit natural would get an ego boost with his walking papers. Big deal.

But I can see the reasoning behind an open contest, too, so what the hell. However it works out will be okay.
