Lupita Nyong'o And Gwendoline Christie Join Star Wars: Episode VII

Good news for the single men in a galaxy far, far away! Two more women have joined Star Wars: Episode VII in the shape of 12 Years A Slave's Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o and Game Of Thrones kickass warrior Gwendoline Christie, aka Brienne of Tarth.

There's no word yet on the roles the pair will play, but Nyong'o has been rumoured for quite some time as a potential cast member or even a female lead - and her casting might explain why she hasn't taken any other high profile jobs on the back of her Oscar win. After all, if she's been in talks for Star Wars it's fair enough to hold out for that.

Christie, meanwhile, is currently on the road in Game Of Thrones, where she has become one of the most popular characters and is currently part of an unlikely double-act. She will also be appearing in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, the first part of which hits cinemas in November. Let's all hope that her blossoming big-screen career doesn't encourage George R.R. Martin to suddenly kill her off.

“I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.”

The pair join Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Andy Serkis, Max Von Sydow, Kenny Baker, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher in the film, which is already shooting in the UK and in the desert. J.J. Abrams is directing from a script by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams.

Disney and Lucasfilm made the announcement Tuesday, as casting speculations have run wild for months. Variety was first to report that Driver was in talks for the villain and that Boyega was on the short list for the male lead.

“We are so excited to finally share the cast of ‘Star Wars: Episode VII.’ It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again,” said J.J. Abrams, who is directing the new film. “We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

While descriptions of characters were left out of the release, sources confirm to Variety that Driver will play a Darth Vader-like main villain, Isaac’s character will have a Han Solo look to him and Boyega will be a Jedi.

It’s unclear who Ridley who will play, but sources have always said the children of Solo and Princess Leia would play a part in the film. Ridley could possibly play their daughter.

In a recent earnings called, Disney chief Bob Iger said this latest installment will be set 30 years after 1983′s “Return of the Jedi” and will feature new and familiar faces.

Abrams and partner Bryan Burk are producing this film through their Bad Robot banner with Kathleen Kennedy exec producing for Lucasfilm. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan did a recent rewrite to the script.

This morning, our scoop about the Star Wars The Force Awakens trailer hitting select theaters this Friday was confirmed. Regal Cinemas mistakenly jumped the gun and revealed which of their theaters were among the few chosen. AMC Theaters and Cinemark then joined suit.

Well, J.J. Abrams has released one of his patented notes recognizing this plan and even revealed the trailer’s total length: 88 seconds. See the Star Wars trailer release date note below.
