Is this a suicide note?

There are times when you might be right about this. Getting old sucks! There is no way around that, just as there is no way around being old someday unless one dies in the process. I have managed to achieve the almost age of 70 years. If you'd asked me when I was twenty-something if that would happen, I would probably have said, I hope not. Age is all about perspective.

That's who the Baby Boomers (and their babies) raised. Folks rolling over in their graves.

Okay so I am a little outside the baby boomer age (barely), but I am not yet rolling over in my grave.

Eat Green stuff .....Vegetables and salads.

Drink Red stuff .... Red wine.

Eat Chicken .... Breasts are best.

Brown rice is nice but red meat ain't neat.

Don't drink too much alcohol even if it's red stuff.

Don't smoke, don't drive too fast, and don't  talk on your cell phone at 65 mph.

Avoid temper tantrims.

Do everything and eat everything in moderation.

Take daily moderate runs or daily long walks.

Live your life the way YOU choose ....  otherwise you're a slave to nothing-ness.

And of course ... be kind to animals, your wife, your kids, and to fellow GetBiggers.

It's evident that some GetBiggers won't pass 55 but that should not be a problem.

By that age you should have done everything you planned to do when you were 18.

This might be my new motto in life. There is a shit load of great advice in your post. Unfortunately, it is probably only those of us who have reached a decided level of maturity that will head it.

I turned 30 in February and, while not old, it made me really think about life and age. I have honestly stopped and thought what would I do different if I had a time machine. My son is 9, he is my time machine, this is my advice for him.

-Good advice. Historically, our offspring reject their elder's advice, at least in most cases until they pass twenty-five and more often are nearing thirty years of age.

Yep, I look at any kind of changes all the time. I'm using a higher UV sunscreen when I go out to games, beach, etc. I've upped it to a UV 50.

You may have the youngest skin on the planet, but on the inside, you are still growing old....Dorian Gray. Yeah, I have a portrait in the attic too that is hideously aging while I remain young and beautiful thanks to coconut oil.

Appreciate the journey? Of what? Humiliation? You must be kidding... There's NOTHING to appreciate of "getting old". It's like appreciating a form of cancer that kills you slowly, very "lucky", yeah... I'm still young and I've seen wuite some people "getting old" already. These who were powerful, agile, interesting, a true role models once, started to slowly "melt away", it's a harsh process to even witness not to speak of going through it by yourself. One must be a very average human being not to notice much of a difference and "appreciate it", otherwise - it's a digusting humiliation.
You are not appreciating it, it's merely your psyche trying to cope with that horrible process and not go insane so it finds "positives" in it, simple as that.

The sooner aging will be "cured", the better, it has already took way too long. Oh, and it will be "cured", it's a shame for these of us who'll die just before of that... It will be like dieing of infection in a XXI century, in other words - ridiculously absurd.

My advice (as from a young person who tries to foresee the future, as old people usualy reflect back on their past) - make sure to become as rich as possible, because for these, in a relatively near future, "old age" will be a whole different experience, at least in some sense. New organs, regenerative therapies, expensive nano-drugs, gene manipulation, etc... There will be a new "unfairness" in the world - these who age in a "regular" way, and these who avoid quite some ailments all along to their last breath. Just like now - there are these who start to look 25 at 40-45, due to advanced expensive cosmetic procedures, but it's just a begining of what's to come.

http://singularityhub.com/2014/05/17/aging-reversed-in-the-heart-brain-and-muscles-of-mice-thanks-to-blood-factor/ - it's just a matter of time - WHEN stuff like this will be available to humans, not IF, but WHEN. So "appreciating" old age is really not a way to go. It must be dissed, horrified, blamed, despised for society to wake the fuck up sooner so the tides would turn faster, as funding is still quite low in this field, even tho' it made a huge progress in the last ten years or so..

I'm guessing you don't travel much if you think these issues are limited to folks in the U.S.

Just so you know, I am one year too old to be a baby-boomer.

Let me spell it out for you then. It isn't just Americans who suffer the social ills of our times. People who travel to other countries (especially other developed countries) know this; those who are aren't world travelers, believe these issues are unique.

Wow, condescending reply to an honest question. Well done. Who the fuck said anything about social ills being unique to America? Pay attention, Prime.

I commented on where we got derailed is all. You wanna argue that the hippie-turned-institution generation isn't, in fact, responsible for helping create the modern "coddled, spoiled, unaccountable, irresponsible, immature, lazy, bedwetting little Liberal twinks" CR mentioned, then by all means, have a go.

But stick to the fucking point.

Being soft on kids and yet overly protective is a massive problem. I  make my son (9) do everything for himself when he's with me. Clothes, clean up, get himself a drink, entertain himself by and large (of course I spoil him now and again). Tell his mom to do the same, says she does. Then I see her putting his shoes on, cleaning up if he spills a glass of milk etc.

Fuck sake.

Going to go camping with him this summer, teach him a few things and have a good time while at it. I swear GB made me more conservative now I think about it.

It's truly sad that it's come to this: common sense and being a good parent somehow makes you "conservative" these days. Our grandparents didn't see the world this way, fucking shame. Shows you how polarized the two ideologies have become. Again, thanks hippies.

Totally get your point, though.

I know he needs a motherly influence, I'm very laid back and didn't believe when he was really sick before (never believe anyone is sick including myself) but I don't give a shit if he gets cut or bruised playing sports or arsing around. He's a tough kid, never complains about a knock, but if it's there for you on a plate (things cleaned for you, clothes put on you) it is human nature to take the easy route.

If I kick up too much of a fuss though could have access curtailed. I'm sure the courts would enforce my legal rights as guardian  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

The thing about getting old is that those of us lucky enough to have lived a long time know that many people aren't so lucky. If you should be so lucky, you too will appreciate the journey. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, younger people today often will not live as long as their parents did nor ever be as successful. It's a real shame.

How old are you?
