Notice when the suicide attempts took place: end of summer, a couple days before school started.

He was 18.... He may have been about to start his Senior year in high school. Anxiety probably took over.

Technically his heart stopped.  But yes, bean bags were fired at him, not bullets.

They wanted to use a taser but the aunt said no.

Fuck  :-\

What am I supposed to tell her and who is this person?

I would think that an absolute prerequisite to the use of lethal force would be it's necessity. And that would have to be predicated by the production of a lethal weapon. "Making moves" like you are going for a gun shouldn't be the same thing as producing a gun. I am sure that once the first round was fired, the rest we fired in sympathy (defined as "somebody else must have seen the gun").

Based on my extensive research comprised of scanning this thread and the jamoke comments therein, I proclaim this shoot:

NOT JUSTIFIED.

"Tell that to the person...." Is not meant to be taken literally.  :-\ :-\

Also, why do you post responses in gigantic red letters?  :) :)

The argument "he was on a suicide mission, he wanted to die" which makes it OK for the cops to kill him is ridiculous. In the US euthanasia is illegal, even with doctor supervision. If that is your argument you are 100% wrong.
A better argument is that he gestured as if he had a gun or something, but then again, we've seen cops shoot a mentally ill double amputee holding a pen in his hand. They claimed that a double amputee tried to stab them with a PEN  ::) (Story: http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/23/us/texas-amputee-shooting/)

I guess its easier to shoot than to diffuse the situation (what cops are supposed to do in the first place).

They used Bean Bags, not lethal force.  It just happened to be lethal in this case.  Perhaps he fell and hit his head after the shots.  Either way, he pretended to have a gun and according to his Aunt, wanted to die and wanted the Police to shoot him.

What is the most damage he could have done? I mean, seriously, shooting him in the head.  ::) ::) One shot to the arm or leg would have done the trick.

They tried to diffuse the situation.  The call they got was a man, armed with a gun waving it around.  The Aunt said he may have a weapon.  They tried to talk Jennings down.  Jennings did not comply at all.  They wanted to use a taser.  The Aunt said No.  They used Bean Bags instead when he gestured with could have been a weapon.

What more did you want them to do?  Make him a sandwich and buy him a PS4?

Claunch trapped one officer with his wheelchair in the corner of a room "where he couldn't get out," said a Houston police department representative who declined to be identified.

As he advanced toward the officers, Claunch was "refusing to show his hands," the representative said.

The object turned out to be a pen, which Claunch attempted to use to stab the cornered officer, according to police accounts reported in the media, including by KTRK.

Furthermore, the officer who shot the wheelchair madman knew how deadly a knife can be.

The incident was the second shooting involving Marin. In October 2009, he shot and killed a knife-wielding man who stabbed his girlfriend and a neighbor, according to published reports at the time. Marin joined the Houston Police Department in 2007.

Officer Marin is a real hero.

STAFF REPORTS

Sun 10/11/2009 Houston Chronicle, Section B, Page 2, 3 STAR Edition

Officer kills man wielding knife

A Houston police officer shot and killed a knife-wielding man who fatally stabbed a neighbor and injured his girlfriend Friday night.

As officers responded to an assault call around 11:40 p.m. at the Cobblestone Apartments in the 8400 block of Winkler, they saw the man stabbing a woman, Houston Police Department spokesman Kese Smith said.

When they got upstairs, officers said they saw the man stabbing another male who attempted to intervene and rescue the 42-year-old woman. The injured man, a neighbor, collapsed.

Two officers, one identified as Officer M. Marin, drew their weapons and ordered the suspect to drop the knife.

The suspect raised the knife to stab the man again and Marin fired two shots, striking the suspect in the arm, Smith said. Wounded, the man with the knife lunged toward Marin, who shot him in the head.

The man with the knife and his neighbor were both pronounced dead at the southeast Houston complex, Smith said. Police have not released their identities pending verification from the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with multiple stab wounds. Smith said she is expected to survive.

Marin, who joined the force two years ago and works in the traffic enforcement division, will be placed on the standard three days of administrative duty, Smith said

I'm guessing one bag hit him in the chest and he went into cardiac arrest from a disturbance in the rhythm of the heart due to possibly V-fib. I remember a young boy who was playing soccer got hit in the chest with a soccer ball and died. The Dr said the ball hit him at an exact moment when his heart was probably between beats. Of course the bags have a much more concentrated force behind them.

The thing is, if they shot him with a taser and he died, everyone would be saying, "why didn`t you use the bean bags".
