not sure what the debate is between the two: better actor? better looking? bigger star? etcetera.....

on who is the bigger global star, there is NO QUESTION THAT CRUISE IS.. he's still the biggest GLOBAL star....

in comparison to just pitt, cruise has bigger overall box office total from his movies, been around as a huge star longer, and more "blockbuster" films than pitt....cruise has actually received ACCOLADES from a number of movie magazines from Premiere to most recently the british movie magazine EMPIRE as the biggest star in the world... heck, most of the time when he is making a appearance on a talk show whether here in the u.s. or abroad, part of his introduction is "the world's biggest movie star" line...

also cruise by himself compared with pitt by himself gets more GLOBAL newsworthy attention when making a appearance then pitt, who is helped in this regard by being married to another big film star that being jolie.. on his own, i don't think pitt would get nearly the global attention in newspapers, magazines, in person at premieres and out and about if he was single...

even pitt i remember at some bash for cruise a few years ago said to the journalist/reporter "that cruise was the king"....

too bad cruise's involvement in scientology!...

Cruise by a million miles.  Cruise has been in movies that are still considered epic today.  Top Gun, JM, Risky Business, Cocktail etc...  Brad Pitt meh!

Those movies are pop culture phenoms.  They changed society's behavior.  After Top gun how many people started running around wearing aviators calling themselves Maverick and Ice Man?  or Jerry Mc with the "you complete me" line.

Pitts best movie is fight club and that is a cult phemon as well but Cruise has had a lot more.

As is said, the "talent" of acting is not anything much to speak about. Everyone and his brother acts these days ... so much so, that the veil of this "art" has been removed and the truth of its lackluster impressiveness exposed for all to see.

Depressing how few seems to recognize this blatant fact.

Sure, some acting is terrible, but so, too, is some people's attempts to make Kraft Dinner, despite the overwhelming majority of folks having zero issue dishing out the zesty, cheesy and delightful cuisine in all its yumminess.

*All these Hollywood blowhards walking out onstage at the Oscars to dramatic/majestic music like they're gods of our time because they memorize some lines and pretend they're someone else without laughing.*

Does it matter, he wasn't really doing the world a favor with that one. But than again he really is the poster child for yuppie 80s narcissism.

Cruise is a 3/5, solid never had a bad movie, but always plays the same guy.

Pitt 3.5, can act well but not extremely well, however he's saved alot of shit movies from being total garbage(burn after reading, 12 monkeys etc)

Christian Bale, I think blows them out of the water.

He's been in a lot of shit movies and may be an uptight asshole, but dam can that mofo act. I'd say he's the only second to DDL. What makes him such a great actor is also the reason many don't like em. He makes shit movies fucking awsome, the only movie he couldn't save ironically was Terminator Salvation. Regardless, dude can play all the nuanced variations of crazy, drug crazy, getbigger crazy, pyscho killer crazy, crazy war vet, while still being able to dominate playing normal roles(cough cough batman)

12 Monkeys

Pitt was brilliant in this!

Look at 12 Monkeys and Legends of the Falls, that is range folks.

Yup, I have to go with Pitt.

...but Cruise gets some bonus points for Top Gun and the little part he played in Tropical Thunder ;D

It appears as if some of you are confusing how good the movie was with how well either actor portrayed their role in the film.

Brad Pitt has been nominated for 84 awards and won 25 throughout his career. Brad has been nominated as best actor or supporting actor 43 times and won 15 times. He has never been nominated for Razzie. Tom Cruise has been nominated for 72 awards and won 20. For acting, he has been nominated 32 times and won 9 times. He's been nominated for 6 Razzies and won twice. For those who don't know, a Razzie is the worst performance award.

Tom Cruise may enjoy a large public following, but so does Brad Pitt. In terms of being honored for their acting ability in particular roles, Brad has a better record. It appears Brad also produced more award winning films. But, this doesn't pertain to his acting ability.

Awards in the entertainment industry are just excuses to push the we're-so-talented-and-amazing program onto the masses who gobble up reality TV and buy into the idea Hollywood is a place of gods. They also, when presented on TV, are big money-makers, what with all the advertising dollars, etc.

I prefer to judge by myself than going for mostly useless awards, i agree with Fortress... Both are not that great, but Cruise has more range and can act a bit better... As for movies, The Last Samurai is probably superior than everything Pitt ever did... Just my opinions of course...

I agree, I would defend oscar for best actor just because for so many of our greatest actors it really truly ends up being a defining point in their careers, but than some real shit heads have gotten them(STallone???).

Acting, the ability to say some words they have memorised without laughing or looking at the camera.
\\

LOL...the idiot speaketh.

I dated an actress in Manhattan around 94-95, and she pushed me to try and land some roles myself. I actually got cast in two off-Broadway productions and had fairly large speaking role in an indie film a director she knew was filming. the pressure is ridiculous, and I didn't pursue it any further. takes a special breed to be successful actor.

And I'm great...imagine how horribly you would fail.

Went out for the high school play, mainly cause four of the hottest girls in the school were in it.  I  got a major part but not the lead and everything was fine as long as I had the script in front of me but then came dress rehearsal with no script in front of a small audience and I was sweating like a pig and screwed up every line.  Drama teacher pulled me aside and tactfully told me she could use me on set changes.

A good actor can make you forget  you are watching a movie or a play but when someone is bad everyone knows it.  Not as easy as it looks.
