Who makes better movies?  I can't think of a single movie Cruise has made that wasn't entertaining, and that's all I want from a movie, but Pitt?  Ever try to watch Tree of Life? No homo ;D

Tom Cruise playing Ron Kovic in 'Born on the Fourth of July', top 10 performances ever IMO.

Speaking of Fight Club, Ed Norton's range is great. But I digress..

He is an amazing actor who doesn't seem to get enough work.

Because he is stupidly hard to work with, no one wants to hire him.

Considering Tom Cruise is basically a midget, the fact that he can be convincing in superhero, macho roles is an acting feat in itself.

Ann Rice, who wrote Interview With a Vampire, was initially pissed that Tom Cruise was chosen to play Lestat, She envisioned someone much more powerful playing that role, she said. Eventually, she endorsed him. Pressure from L. Ron Hubbard could be very persuasive.

Brad Pitt played Louis de Pointe du Lac, who was Lestat's male lover and a very sensitive character for a vampire. Other notables male actors in that movie with Christian Slater, Antonio Banderas and Steven Rae. The fact that Tom held his own among all that young talent, says a lot about him.

Steven Rae was amazing in the Crying Game along with Jaye Davidson and Forest Whitaker.

Agreed, he was great as Lestat... I liked Banderas also in that movie...

I'd have to agree. He portrayed himself as an excellent driver convincingly....

Or as Calvin H calls it, "Tropical Thunder".  Magnolia was a bit outside the norm for him too.

But, I still think Pitt is an overall better actor.  Seems to have much more range.

Something like that :)

Still waiting for Rain Man 2.

For having such a short stature (Tom towered over him) and looking the way he does, Hoffman has great range for an actor (asshole, good guy, captain hook, retard, criminal, journalist, this guy does it all and memorably so)

Papper Pappersberg is correct, Hoffman is a great actor with a huge range, can play it all.

x2

Dressing up changing haircuts for each movie and taking sharp turns with scripts and messing with dialects does not equal great "breadth" or "range".

Not saying Cruise is the widest ranged actor either but lets not elevate brad onto a pedestal here.
tom cruise is without a doubt one of the finest actors of our time.......right up there with brando and deniro!!!

very few of his movies have been flops and he has played a wide range of charcters.

Yes to latch onto what Willie says here.. it's sometimes hard to appreciate the current crop but Tom will be recognized in the future as one of the greats. Just as Deniro, Brando and those are now.

Competitive since the eighties going on 2010s with a solid track record.

Fun fact. He was the face model for Disney's Aladdin drawn from 1992.

joe pecshi always impressed me w the different type of character he could play.

because he's Italian he'll always be cast as a prototypical Italian for roles but his ability to play different types of characters inside of that is awesome. he can make you laugh ( my uncle vinny) or think fuck this guy is crazy (goodfellas).

as for the Pitt / cruise debate-  Pitt on his ability to play a seemingly broader range of roles, and cruise for making dependable blockbusters.

as an aside it funny how actors are always thought of as studs when the big nerds in highschool were in drama class.

and cruise never should have cast himself for the role of jack reacher. what makes the character of reacher so gravitational is in part his physical being. anyone whos read the reacher series knows exactly what I mean.

From early on cruise has always shown that he could act "all the right moves"

A career going 4 decades (80's, 90, 2000's, 2010's) is phenomenal

Yes, but what about Van Damme?

Van Damme had killer dance moves and split kicks that both Pitt and Cruise would envy

Van Damme is a excellent actor.

Curt Sloans torment in the emergency waiting room in Thailand was portrayed beautifully.

Compare him to Chuck Norris and Seagal who despite having us accents cant display emotions at all!
