Samir was a friend of Mike, and Mike saved his life by giving him potassium when  Samir started cramping up from a diuretic. Samir owed it to Mike. Also, Mentzer went all the way to Germany to support Samir at the Olympia in 1983 while Arnold was rooting for Bertil.
Plus, Samir's viewpoint standing at the back of the stage while not getting a single comparison is not the best angle to observe the physiques and judge the results. I would rather listen to the opinion of IFBB Pro John Terilli who saw everyone not only backstage but also sitting front and center row in one of the best seats in the house.

Agree with all you state. I dont put any stock in competitors that never went on to achieve much afterwards. Di Arnold really crush all their hopes and dreams, their ambitions crush by the weight of Arnold's victory. Or where they just slightly above average bodybuilders used as fluff fillers till the new upcoming champs arrive, the likes of Lee Haney.
