Someone should create an AI version of the 1980 Olympia with an alternate outcome. Should then be circulated around online. Then the malevolent spirit of Mentzer will finally have peace and be at rest.

Epic! Mentzer winning and everyone claiming it was rigged that Arnold should won instead of ending in a ridiculous fifth place, and Paul Graham sold his soul to the heavy-duty system ;D

Today marks the 25 anniversary of Mike's passing
....

If the CBS 1980 Olympia is released this summer, Mike will finally be able to rest in peace

Nevermind Arnold, both Zane and Dickerson were better than Mentzer

So was Coe and Walker. He should have taken 6th instead of 5th.

So was Roy Callender. Mentzer should've placed 7th at best.

Probably because CBS didn't have room in their fall lineup for something that would've garnered 10K views. When they could've played reruns of Charlie's Angels and gotten 50K views.

This notion that it was 'too controversial' is rather funny. People tune in to controversy. In fact, if CBS were to air it now, everyone on the planet who follows the sport of bodybuilding would tune in. The television world is all about money, views and ratings. If NBC were airing any other pro sporting event be it baseball,  basketball,  football or boxing- in fact the Ali-Holmes fight was the same weekend- at the same time CBS was airing the Olympia, no one would watch it especially in 1980. They scrapped it because they would lose ratings for that time slot. Period.

A question for guys who are old enough to remember.: was the 79 Olympia aired live on television? Or was it taped then aired at a later date?

That cbs not airing it because of controversy is totally made up. It wouldn't matter to them who won in the slightest, if anything arnold being in it and on the rise fame wise would have boosted what little viewership it got. To the outside world looking in there would've been no controversy, they knew nothing about arnold getting a free ticket into the show and the backstage arguments that went on. All they'd see is the biggest man winning and wouldn't be pitting him against is 1974 or 1975 self.
Cbs ran out of tape and had an incomplete show, that's what I've read and heard.
