Probably because CBS didn't have room in their fall lineup for something that would've garnered 10K views. When they could've played reruns of Charlie's Angels and gotten 50K views.
This notion that it was 'too controversial' is rather funny. People tune in to controversy. In fact, if CBS were to air it now, everyone on the planet who follows the sport of bodybuilding would tune in. The television world is all about money, views and ratings. If NBC were airing any other pro sporting event be it baseball, basketball, football or boxing- in fact the Ali-Holmes fight was the same weekend- at the same time CBS was airing the Olympia, no one would watch it especially in 1980. They scrapped it because they would lose ratings for that time slot. Period.
A question for guys who are old enough to remember.: was the 79 Olympia aired live on television? Or was it taped then aired at a later date?
