Hey Vince...I'm not one of your detractors..I have a lot of respect for you because you once actually competed and  had a world-class physique....I've watched your feud with Goodrum over the years and I have to admit its been entertaining and hilarious ....I haven't been able to follow along with everything thats went on with you and him over the years and I notice you have lots of detractors on here....they call you senile, a fraud, and discredit the title you won at the IFBB Mr. Canada due to unscrupulous behind the scenes machinations on your part.  Is that true?..I know this has been discussed before but I missed out on that whole thing...once and for all be honest and explain whether or not your win was legit or not...

Did you manipulate the judges in any way beforehand or stack the judging panel with friends who you absolutely knew would vote for you? Or did you know what the outcome of the contest was going to be beforehand, thereby making the whole contest a sham?

I was working for Ray Beck who owned two Western Gyms in Vancouver. I was managing one of his gyms. He also had stores that sold supplements and gym equipment. He decided to promote the Mr Canada contest in 1970. He was able to get the contest because Ben Weider had recently put up the fees so that no promoter in Eastern Canada wanted the show. As it was Ray lost money on the promotion. Since he was such a busy guy he recruited me and Roz to help him with advertising, picking trophies, selecting judges, and other duties required to put on a big bodybuilding contest. There was an arm wrestling contest as well as a bench press contest. We talked about judging and I insisted there were more judges so that controversies wouldn't happen. We ended up with a list of 15 competent and independent judges. I knew two of those judges. The rest I didn't know personally and most I had never seen until the show. Chuck Sipes was the guest poser and also the head judge. 13 judges showed up that day for the contest which was judged at the old Western Gym on Hastings Street under available light.

There was also a Mr Pacific Northwest contest for Washington State, BC, and Alaska. Not many showed up for that contest which was a shame. Not many competitors came from Eastern Canada. Only Philippe Alfani from Montreal. No one came from Canada's largest city, Toronto. I guess Vancouver was too far away for those guys. As it turned out the contest was between three guys. Philippe, Ken Rivard and myself. I surely didn't expect to win. Philippe was the biggest guy there but was a couple of weeks out as they say. Ken Rivard was the local favourite and won best arms, chest and back. Best upper body by far. I won best legs and best poser. Walter Milner won best abs and most muscular. John Mikl (Thor) won best junior. It wasn't a strong turn out but that sometimes happens and the winner gets the title even though there may be better guys around. The same can be said for the arm wrestling. Big Jim Forsythe won over me in the final. Two weeks earlier I had no trouble beating Jim but on the day he was the better man. We were mates so that was fine with me.

I got the majority of votes for first place and Ken got several votes as well. Philippe got one first place vote. That shows you how close the contest was. Ken wasn't happy with the result and I don't think he competed again. John Mikl and Walter Milner both won the title a few years later. Walter was a really nice guy from Moosehorn Manitoba. We called him 'Cuts' and he retained those even when he gained a lot of size. He died years later when he fell off a scaffold while cleaning windows on a high rise building in Vancouver.

very nice history lesson..much appreciated....but did you have an influence on the judges???...be honest...and did you make prior statements that the judges were your friends and voted for you due to that?

I am always honest about bodybuilding. I never exaggerate or make false statements. I post what I recollect which is all anyone can do. Even back in 1970 there were controversies in bodybuilding. Arnold beat Sergio, etc. So we wanted more judges than the IFBB demanded which was 7. When you eliminate top and bottom scores that leaves only 5 judges deciding the winner which wasn't good enough. Ray and I discussed who to pick and I wanted past champions. Ray knew a lot of those guys so we had to track some down. Of the two friends who were on that list one voted for Philippe and one voted for me. I was pleased that I got Chuck Sipes' vote. The contest was close like I said and I was a surprised winner that night. My Dad was there and that meant a lot to me. He used to tell me that bodybuilding was going to ruin my life! I had an older brother who used to bash me a lot so one day when I was 15 I vowed to do something about it and started lifting weights in a neighbour's basement. It suited me since I never did what everyone else was doing anyway. I figured it would get me more girls but that never happened.

Physiques than him only they didn't turn up to compete.
