You don't need to obsess about cars to appreciate a new bmw / mercedes. Those people with all their mental gymnastics about how they wouldnt want a car like  are just bitter poor people.

One can appreciate a nice bmw or mercedes without feeling a strong desire to own one. My friend makes 100K a year and his wife makes about 60-70K a year (the average american household makes 49K a year). So, Id say they are doing nice for themselves. He owns a Honda Accord and she owns Toyota Camry. Could they afford a BMW? Certainly. They just don't want to.  They like their cars. They are not overly invested in owning a BMW. As he said, "It just doesn't matter." They are far from poor or bitter.

Wow looks shit just like it always has for the past 20 years.

This is the last great 7 series, when BMW actually meant quality.

Now its just pure shit for morons like Da Vinci who want a throwaway car with no value.  Buy a new one and come back and tell us what its worth in 5 years.  :D

worth 50% of its initial value?

This not counting the 20% of initial car value you have to spend on repairs.

Adonis, a close friend of mine's father has a true S600, like the one from Leno's Garage.  His father loves it, because his father had it made for him back in 1969 or 1970, and the manuals have his name on them.

My friend, who is a performance enthusiast, is not a fan of this car.  I tell him he is an absolute moron.  That it is akin to saying you don't like the Ferrari GTO because it is terrible at pulling the family camper.

The Mercedes 560 SEC is probably my favorite Benz made in my lifetime.

There used to be a certain prestige of having the 100k mile badge on the grill of a Mercedes.  And then the 150k.  My mother had a 1976 450 SEL that she drove into the damned ground.  Quite literally, no more parts, or the fact that it was cheaper to get a new vehicle.

I loved that car.

I am actually looking forward to the Cadillac CT6.

Those are the safe bet cars...you know the ones consumer reports recommends. And their is nothing wrong with it, unless you believe the Camry is "Grounded To The Ground".

Some people want that "feeling", whether it be performance, or luxury, or both. Some just want a reliable car, and none of all those frills. The good thing is that the market has pretty everything a person can want, not want, or desire.

I think that CT6 will prove more reliable than the S Class of 7 series, because it lacks all that electronic stuff. But, it may not have that many early adopters because it doesn't have that flash and panache that the other two, nor the history.

I liked the e39 m5 carbon black would have liked to have one...I had 2 e60's and I had 335 2007 when it came out...

When I was in hs I had a e39 carbon black m5 ;D one of the best cars ever even in today's standards

Never liked Audi and never will, nice cars but I've driven pretty much the entire line up including a few RS models and I hate the way they steer and handling. Front wheel drive biased cars. Overrated, just looks nice and I'm not a fan of their overhyped interiors also

Not counting Porsche for the German marquees Benz and BMW is the only way to go

But it distills the notion that if you don't drive a BMW, then youre poor. Drive around any nice neighborhood in NYC and you dont always see beautiful, expensive cars, especially people with families. You often see very standard cars. Hondas, Nissans, etc.

No doubt. Sensible, relatively frugal living and wise investing are the keys to wealth.

If you're already maxing out your tax-advantaged retirement accounts, have some money set aside for emergencies, own or are buying a decent home with a low rate mortgage, and pay off any credit card debt each month, go ahead and buy whatever you want.

But if you're not already taking care of these very important things and just go out and buy as much car as you can afford to buy, you're doing it wrong. If you can't do all of these things AND spend six figures on a vehicle, priorities are out of whack.

Just because you CAN buy it doesn't necessarily mean you should. And I can personally buy pretty much anything I want.

Yep.

Called an Aero Wheel and is actually pretty legendary in styling in the classic automotive world.  Look it up.  There are a few just in Schools of Art and Design.

That's a heap of shit.
The British invented a square steering wheel. The legendary rocketship of the 70's known as the Allegro.   :P

BMW got their rep from yuppies, if anything you see the guys in the low end BMW models trying to play speed racer, or the guys with the M models who run them into the ground. This is now the BMW stereotype---inconsiderate, road rage having, "I'm better than you" ("but, I used to drive a Honda Civic") d-bags. Just go on BMW forums.  And a lot of people don't want to be associated with that image. I understand that not everybody lives their life from stoplight to stoplight, and having a reliable mode of transportation, that doesn't attract attention, especially from car thieves, and gets good gas mileage, is far more attractive than an unreliable German car (BMW, et al).

I've been driving merc S classes for years but recently purchased a nice twin turbo AMG SLK for the wife.  I enjoy driving it too so I have decided to go for something a bit smaller and faster when I get a new car in August to celebrate my mid life crises.

I'm having a test of one of these Italian beauties next week. Its actually wider than my S class but 10 inches shorter and sounds absolutely fantastic in sports mode whereby an exhaust bypass valve doubles the noise factor.

I have a BMW 650i gran coupe and for fun lease a MB SL550. Both cars are beautiful but I always pic the Beemer. I was a Mercedes guy for years and prior to that a Lexus guy. However, nothing beats a BMW's engine. The Maserati is gorgeous, but I live in an area of FL where there are lots of tourists but no high end dealers within 300 miles or so. I would have to service a Maserati or Aston in Atlanta or Jax. Regardless, the 7 is on my to drive list  ;D

I find this sort of thing most bizarre.

No-one knows what I earn. It's not something that is discussed. So why on earth is your friend bragging about his 100k and his wifes 60-70k? My wife does have one friend who is always bragging about what her hubby earns but she's just a fucking weirdo.

On top of that, why are you discussing cars they don't own and hearing their justification for not owning one?

I have friends with all sorts of cars - on any given night we'd be having a party at someone's house, there would be Toyota's, Honda's, BMW's, Benz and even a Lambourghini parked up outside the house. And you know what, at no point does anyone end up justifying or even discussing their choice of car. If someone has a new car, even if it's a Trabant, we'd all say "new wheels? Looks nice".

I don't get this at all - is this the norm for some people? To sit around talking about how wealthy they are, how they can afford a BMW/Benz but then say how they don't want to.

It's like me saying - I have a 1080 TV, I earn $xxxk a year. I could afford a 3D, curved screen 4K TV but I choose not to. Sounds like a dick sort of thing to say, right? Because it is.

Who the fuck wants to know what sort of car you could afford but don't really want?

If you want a BMW - buy one, if you want a Camry - buy one. But purleeeeeeeeeeze - you just sound like a bitch when you say "I could afford a BMW but I don't want one".

My parents had one of those, they traded in their Maxi for it...

We thought we were the shit till we went over dinas mawddwy pass in it. My mother had her foot flat on the brakes all the way down and we were still doing 50.

Funny how the Maxi never took off in the same way the Mini did...

Can you expand a little on what makes the BMW better.  People on here seem to think the S class is a way better car than the 7 series, but in my opinion it's an apples and oranges comparison in terms of what the cars were designed to do.  What makes the BMW engine better than the Mercedes?
