Happy birthday! Yes I know the area well. Exit 63 for State Highway 72 east.  Beautiful area full of really expensive real estate. I guess you're renting a house for the week by the beach? Check out the light house and see if your legs are good enough to get you to the top with out breaking a sweat.  ;D Did you know whales have been spotted in the general area 3 years in a row? If you like jazz a really good college group makes summer money in the various restaurants and ice cream palors there. If you want I can find the location, date and time. I know the saxophone player.

If you were here, you'd be out running at dawn. We are in the midst of a hot spell. I'm not regretting putting in central air-conditioning and the mini-split upstairs. Inside the house is an even and pleasant 74 degrees all day.

Ever have one of those days where you just don't want to work out?  I'm lying in bed facebooking and getbigging instead of hitting back. Going to get off now and get that first warm up set over with.  It's a double today. Back and cardio. I hate one set to failure. It's so damn stressful. Two more days of this and I'm going to multiple sets again.

Saw the doc this past Friday and was given the go ahead to up the training (but not the weight).  Sooo...Yesterday I did 21 sets of back, 12 sets of biceps and 10 sets of forearms.

Will rest today and train tomorrow.  I am trying hard to lose my perma-bulker look (think early Draper but not as massive!) and that will take time.   I feel pretty good today but then I am listening to the beautiful and talented Diana Krall... ;D

I'm curious, does your doctor work out? A doctor I saw years ago, told me when I was nearing 40 years old that I should give up weight training because I was getting too old for it and do something healthier like running or bicycling. I already bicycled a lot and ran occasionally. That doctor retired and eventually died of heart failure, unfortunately. I took his advice with a grain of salt.

Remember, it is called the practice of medicine, not all doctors have all the knowledge they should to offer sound advice regarding weight training. If you are recovering from an injury or a health issue, your best bet is to simply pay attention to what your body tells you. Whatever you do, do it moderately at first to see how that works out and advance when you and not your doctor thinks you are ready. If you really need advice, talk to a physical therapist or talk with a trainer.

I didn't ask him but in all honesty he doesn't look like he does.  Most people do other things for exercise.  He was kind enough to say I was above average in build at any age but he admits he sees mostly normal people.   I have had doctors in the past (male and female) that I've upset when they upset me.  Example:

"Weight training is unhealthy at your age"...My reply?  "You have to lift a lot just to get out of bed so perhaps you're right!"  I try to be humorous but not always.   ;D  I trust them to do their job and since I am awaiting possible surgery, I try and be attentive to what they're saying.

Try.   ;D

What surgery are you waiting on?

Leg.  Not too keen on it either.  My choice either way and if I continue to feel uncomfortable about it then I will refuse it for now.

By leg, do you mean knee surgery? A torn meniscus perhaps or just a worn out joint?

Sorry I am not familiar with your medical situation except for the leg talk. Hope you will be back soon. 21 sets of back is a hell of a lot of sets so I assume your health is relatively okay. Just keep hitting it and if an exercise hurts don't use it even if it was a favorite in the past.

I bitch a lot because my mind is willing but my body seems really fragile at times. I'm always injuring myself but it goes with aging if you are training like you're in your 20's. I was doing power cleans yesterday and my left hamstring felt like if I wasn't careful it would rip. I felt pain and tightness.

I also noticed my response to training isn't nearly as good as when I was younger. I could literally get into decent cardio shape in two weeks of training when I was younger. 4 months away from running? No problem. I would hit the road hard for two weeks and the improvement was drastic. Last year I ran for about 6 months to be able to run 5 miles faster than a crawl.  Same with lifting.

I did this work out today. Delt and tris. Hit workout, no warm ups listed. One set to failure.

Press behind the neck 1 x 6 ( went all the way down to resting the bar on my traps like I was squatting.)
dumbbell shoulder press 1 x 10 (all the way down)
dumbbell lateral raises 1 x 12
Single arm D ring laterals 1 x 12
Rear delt dumbbell raises 1 x 14
Barbell shrugs 1 x 12

deep full range weighted dips 1 x 9
tricep pushdowns 1 x 13
Rope pushdowns 1 x 14
Reverse D ring pulley kick backs 1 x 14

Weighted crunches with a plate behind head 1 x 50 (feet on bench)
Pulley crunches 1 x 40

I went for a run for two miles. The humidity was really high. I was sweating like I was in the desert.

Heading to New York City tomorrow for an over night mini vacation. The hotel said they can give me a free pass to a top shelf gym but I'm not working out. I thought maybe just cardio. I have run in Central park in the past but I think this trip is just nothing but pleasure. Seeing a concert in Madison Square Garden. After that I'll hit a bar or two enjoying the night.
