When was the last genuinely scary horror movie
« on: September 01, 2015, 09:08:47 AM »
o I watched the babadook after everyone raving about how scary it was

are they serious it was awful

made me think when was the last time a genuinely scary horror movie was made

cant think of a recent one

problem is as you get older the less and less you get sucked into the movie so even though they may be scarier than when you were younger it's harder to suspend the disbelief.  I'm pretty sure that some movies today that bore me would have given me nightmares when I was younger.

Babadook has massive hype.

And I agree with you - more disturbing than scary.

I'm going with the last Freddy movie I saw.

This.

I like watching horror flicks for entertainment but it's pretty embarrassing for a grown man to actually find a movie genuinely scary.

I'm too old to genuinly get scared of horrormovies these days.

Only thing that causes a reaction at times are startle-scares, but they last only a millisecond.

It's not like when we were younger and a movie could really scare you.

I was a real horror-movie afficionado back in the day, and im still looking for that movie that can really scare you.
Scare you and not gross you out that is. Not looking for movies such as Salo, Serbian Film, Human Centipede and the likes.

I remember a movie that scared me when i was younger, and that was "Without Warning" from 1980 with Jack Palance and CSI Caruso among others.

Unfortunately, it doesn't create any of that emotion these days,
the only emotion i get is nostalgia and remembering the old days :D

scary might be the wrong word

but the should build tension and make you jump

or fuck with your head a little

I was laughing all the way through the babadook

I absolutely loved "The Babadook." One of my favorite movies.

Bigmc, did you understand the metaphor behind the movie?

2/3 was pretty damn tense, I thought. Ending got all metaphorical, but still pretty interesting if you think it through.

The Awakening (Netflix) was solid. Excellent ghost story, similar to The Others. Not many jump scenes or special effects, but clever and creepy as fuck. Must-see for the slow burn suspense/horror crowd.

The Conjuring, too; it was probably scarier, but it petered out at the end, as many do. Lame exorcism scene that almost ruined it. Great up until, though.

Plus, society has drastically changed. My father was telling me that when the Exorcist came out in the movies, people were deathly afraid of the movie. People actually walked out of the movies. Some people even fainted during the movie. However, with all the violence and gross things we see via the internet, its almost impossible to scare people these days. When they did the remake of the exorcist and it was in the movies, people were laughing at some of the scenes.

The scariest thing in the babadook was the woman's vibrator, which looked like it was an heirloom from the 1930s.

I was strangely attracted to her though  :-X

on a side note the last film that genuinely left me disturbed was

the road

not a horror but carved in hopelessness

especially touching for dads cause you can see yourself in that protect your child at any cost situation

Not the last, but one of the very best: Session 9.

Just got everything right in that one. Possibly my all-time favorite.

Yeah, the internet has really made us far more immune to scares. After all, if we want to see horror now, we just can visit liveleak and watch a few videos of what real "horror" looks like. Movies just aren't going to have the same effect as they did in the past.

Absolutely. [REC] as well, Spanish film. Fantastic. The Strangers was decent, too.

I can't recall the ending. "Is Tamara here?" was creepy as hell, though, and then when you first see him behind Liv inside the house. Brilliant suspense, I thought, but, yeah, forgot how it ends.
