Aside from Marino, they all played for great teams. It was also in the pre- salary cap era when teams could stay together year after year.

I'm not saying Brady is the best ever (impossible to compare eras) but he's certainly in the conversation.

IMO Brady has been the best with limited WR talent.

And they never draft top WR's for him either. One big criticism of the Pats in the New England media is this.

Julian Edelman was a college quarterback and now is an elite NFL WR.

Peyton is the most prolific passer in the regular season and Montana was the closest to flawless in the postseason.  Whoever the greatest ever is depends on how you weight the post season.  Montana and Bradshaw both had perfect Super Bowl records.  That's quite a bit different from Brady's and Manning's result in the biggest games of their lives.  Aaron Rodgers is playing the position right now better than anyone has ever.  He pushes the ball downfield with fewer mistakes than anyone has ever made.  His TD to Int Ratio is 4-1.  He throws for a greater % of TDs/pass and fewer Int's/pass than both manning and Brady.  His passer rating for his career is 10 points higher than theirs as well.

Montana only went to 4 Super Bowls so his playoff record was far from flawless. I believe Brady has the most post season wins in NFL history.

CBS Sports

If you ever need a reminder of how good Tom Brady is, all you need to do is look at the Super Bowl record book, which has basically turned into Brady's autobiography.

The Patriots quarterback practically rewrote the record book during New England's 28-24 win over Seattle in Super Bowl XLIX. Brady broke, tied or extended eight Super Bowl records in the Patriots win.

Among the records that Brady broke were: Most completions in a game (37), most completions in a half (20), most Super Bowl starts (6) and most career touchdown passes in the Super Bowl (13).

Brady's 37 completions broke Peyton Manning's old record of 34, which was set last season in Denver's 43-8 loss to Seattle.

Tom Brady rewrote the record book against the Seahawks. (USATSI)
Tom Brady rewrote the record book against the Seahawks. (USATSI)
The most impressive record is probably the touchdown pass record. Brady's four touchdown passes against the Seahawks gave him 13 for his career in the Super Bowl, moving him past Joe Montana, who threw 11 touchdown passes in four Super Bowls. Brady went into Super Bowl XLIX with only nine career touchdown passes in the Big Game.

Besides breaking four records, Brady also tied two records. Two big records.

Thanks to the win, Brady now joins Montana and Terry Bradshaw as the only quarterbacks in NFL history who have won four Super Bowls as a starter.

Brady's 328-yard, four touchdown performance against Seattle earned him his third Super Bowl MVP award, which tied Joe Montana for the most ever.

Of course, there were also some records that Brady couldn't break because he already had them. Going into Super Bowl XLIX, Brady held the record for most career passes, most career completions and most career passing yards.

By tacking on 37 completions, 50 pass attempts and 328 passing yards to those records, Brady probably put those records far out of reach.

The Super Bowl record book next year should probably just have a picture of Brady on it.

Montana was near flawless in Super Bowls is what I meant.  Its taken Brady 6 times to equal the amount of wins Montana did.  Montana had a passer rating over 127 in the Super Bowls.  To put that in perspective, Brady is off to one of the most efficient seasons he's ever had and he's sitting at 118 so far this year.  There is no doubt he played better in Super Bowls than Brady.  Brady has thrown for fewer TDs and more Int obviously per Super Bowl than Montana.

Sure but Joe only took his stacked teams to 4, Brady took his to 6.
Going 4 - 2 in Super Bowls is superior than going 4 - 0.

Joe Montana is the greatest QB of all time and it's really not even close. Montana played in an era where defenses were allowed to actually play defense. Pass interference was hardly ever called. DBs would practically tackle wide receivers before they even got off the line of scrimmage . And Montana took more significant hits from defensive lineman in a month than Brady has taken in his career.
If Montana played today in this offensive era he would routinely throw for over 5,000 yard and complete 70% of his passes. He would own every single QB record there is.  And I say that as someone who hated the 49ers.

Those two loses were glorious.

He may well be and I'm not arguing one way or another.
The 49ers of that era had no weaknesses because there was no salary cap...in today's NFL there's no way a team could keep all of those star players.

Salary cap and free agency along with a revolving door at skilled positions. Moss is the only notable wide out he had for two seasons. Most people have no idea who Troy Brown is and he had the longest tenure at WR. Compare this with Montana, who spent his Super Bowl years in San Francisco with a consistent and dominant cast around him, which included Jerry Rice, Dwight Clark and Roger Craig, as they were kept under contract with the club unless they were traded away or not kept on the “Plan B” free agency that was around, and rarely used, at the time.

It's been rags to riches with this guy as the 199th draft pick who got a lucky break when Bledsoe went down.

There was no Craig or Rice when Montana won his first Superbowl.

Everyone talks about the players he had... They talk up Rice and Craig. I get it, I do, but Montana won his first Superbowl basically by himself.

Then broke records before either one of those guys showed up.

Maybe you don't remember it well.

Both Montana's and Brady's first Super Bowls were defensively dominated.

Montana threw for 157 yards and Brady 146. Even though it was 20 years earlier, the 49ers offense has more known names than the Patriots offense.

I do remember it well. Montana was still the MVP of that superbowl.

My point is simply that the argument that Montana had Rice or Craig or any of that is as nonsensical as saying that Brady had no one.

Both were on very good teams.

Montana has also never lost a Superbowl... That's something that Brady will never be able to claim.

Yes and it was the championship game, niners would have gone to the SB and win and the first team to win 3 in the row haha 8)

I think anyone most will say that getting to the big game and losing that game is worse than not getting there at all. (Maybe just me?)

John Elway will always have the specter of 4 Super Bowl losses to contend with, as will Jim Kelly.
