Because the market was wide open. 99% of normal cab drivers are smelly, stinky, tardy, thieving, pigs. Plus lots of people own cars and have lots of free time. Free time + car = make a few bucks via uber.

People are going to be more jealous of a surgeon making 500K a year, than a burger king employee making 30k a year. As such, given that she was irate and rude, coupled with the fact that she was a soon-to-be doctor, brought out the worst in people. People are jealous of others. Its a fact.

Now, of course, she deserves to be punished for her behavior. I am not excusing what she did. I am just saying that people's reactions are going to be different depending on a variety of factors (the age, race, occupation, sex, etc of the criminal).

When you put the whole picture together: entitled childhood, in-shape, decent looking (this is subjective), soon-to-be doctor, salary, sex, the way she's dressed, etc, people are going to have a qualitatively distinct reaction based on these factors. And their response would most likely be different if you replaced those factors with a different set of factors. Would people still want her to be fired? Maybe. But I doubt they would be leaking her personal information, photoshopping her, finding her FB and instagram. People are definitely "out for blood" because of those above factors.

Technology will render them obsolete. Once self driving cars are commonplace and practical, drivers will no longer be needed and that's what Uber and Lyft are banking on in the future.
