I don't believe in tipping unless waiter goes above and beyond what is expected so in your case some are doing you a favor. Essentially tipping is you paying what the owner should be paying. They pay minimum wage if the worker doesn't at least equal that. Waiter/waitresses choice to be in that industry so no idea why some get mad if a tip isn't given since they get minimum wage anyways. They don't really do anything beyond anyone else does in a job so why tipping has become a thing makes no sense except to benefit the owner who doesn't have to pay them/evaluate performance, etc.

Wait staff don't make minimum wage. In fact, they make substantially less than that and therefore, rely heavily on tips

If a waiters/waitresses tips + salary don't = minimum wage, their employer is required to make up the difference.  That's what he means.

I don't agree with him on his stance on tipping, but your point has already been explained already.

I tip heavy, same as you. Most meals I tip between 20-25%. If the service is really sub-par I will go down to 15%. Only twice has it been so bad I left nothing.

I do exactly the same.

Yes, but if a waiter or waitress is overly rude, they shouldn't get a tip (or a lower one). Your tip is contingent on how well you do your job.

I am not against tipping, but Im not for tipping just for the sake of tipping either.

When the wait staff fucks up your order, brings things out of sequence, forgets something, makes you wait forever then they shouldn't be tipped.  No automatic tipping for sucking at your job.  I've had waitresses just fucking disappear and show up to hand me the check after waiting forever.  Fuck them.

You sound just like me. I actually feel bad about tipping when the service is shitty. I usually do 20% of the total bill with tax if the service is good. If I sit there for a while and have a few bottles of wine and dessert with my wife, I might drop like $60-$80 if they add to the conversation and are cool people.

I was listening to a podcast with Ron Partlow on it, and he said in Australia you don't tip waters because their salaries are good. Said even in fancy expensive restaurants the service sucked, waitresses were rude, and didn't care if you were satisfied or not. He said even getting water refills was like pulling teeth. So I 100% see your point on this.

Good point except it's completely false.  They just do their job like anyone else who has a job to do.  Why is everyone sufficiently motivated by a paycheck to perform their work except 'servers' who, for some reason, are going to require the dangling of an additional carrot of indeterminate size?

Tipping discussions.  Everyone patting themselves on their self-satisfied backs because they gave someone money.  "And here's a little something for yourself."  Did the waiter polish your monocle for you?  It's so lame.

Besides, it's not like waiters bring some extraordinary skill set to bear for you.  They ask you what you want and then carry food from the kitchen to your table.  What kind of moron would you have to be to fuck that up?

I usually tip 15 to 20%...What I do not like is "tip Jars". The kind of shit you see at Starbucks etc. Nothing worse than throwing a buck or two in the thing just as the person turns their head and never sees you do it.

For average service, I tip 12 percent on the bill total. To offset the tax added.

If someone is shit, I give 'em a good three or four percent, plus a written note on the receipt to get fucked. Usually accompanied with a frowning face.

Like another says, they're taking my order, bringing me a plate and checking in on me at some point to see if I'm OK. Maybe top up my root beer. All with a smile.

Big deal.

I'll be equally pleasant and toss ya 12 percent. Now move along.

Fortress has shit to do.

It's a good convo.....I didn't even learn that the restaurant was required to "make good" until I read your post and looked it up.

But, even though you feel that way about the restaurant industry in relation to other services industries, most who enter the field do so under the understanding that, overall, good service gets you 15% and better service can lead to more.  Tipping for service in restaurants is standard USA practice, and expected from the restaurant, the waiters, and the customers, on the whole.

Lot's of Charlie Cheapasses in this thread.

The American federal government requires a wage of at least $2.13 per hour be paid to employees that receive at least $30 per month in tips. If wages and tips do not equal the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour during any pay period, the employer is required to increase cash wages to compensate.

I fully agree. I don't necessarily tip a standard amount. If you want to earn more, work more. If you are rude, you run the risk of getting stiffed.

What about takeout orders? Do you tip the cashier or the sandwich shop who's workers don't make min wage? What about the pizza delivery guy? How do you guys handle that?

One of my exes was cheap and tipped poorly. Worse yet, she was incredibly high maintenance, always wanted exceptional service, and special menu modifications by the chef/cook.

I solved the problem by getting separate checks.

Rarely do I tip less than 20%.

I typically survey the restaurant and if it's packed and my server is handling a bunch of tables and the restaurant is clearly understaffed I know that's a function of poor management and not a server issue.

Even if I have a grumpy server who takes my order and basically never comes back I'll still give 20%.  I just figure the server needs it more than I do and I'm happy to give it.

Tipping is an accepted and well known custom today when dining out so be prepared to participate.

I just feel differently about it.

If $12-$15 on top of a my bill doesn't phase me in the slightest and I can give it to someone else that needs it more I'm good with that.

They also get jealous if their man tips a waitress too much.

Tipping is not a fucking charity.  It is a wage.  If you paid someone to paint your house black and they painted it pink, would you still pay them the $500 you owe?
Same with a waitress.  They have a job to do to earn that tip.

When I was a kid, I remember my Dad giving the guy at the full serve gas station a $1 tip after he pumped the gas and wiped down the windshields.
