I was there too, 5th row for both the prejudging and evening show. I had Platz 1st, Callendar 2nd, Padilla 3rd, Dickerson 4th and Franco 5th. The most controversial contest I've ever seen.

Great back detail on Platz. He did what he could with his genetics, but  PADILLA seemed more balanced and was equally if not more ripped this show.

After the bicep tear Platz was finished. Shame because he never had a chance to peak properly again and compete for the title

It is a shame about the bicep tear. Had he not had it, he would have/could have won the 1982 Mr. Olympia. Casey should have taken it that year.

I'd give Jay '09, sure. Ronnie had him in '06 still, IMO. '07 was attributable to highway robbery, and the remaining years nobody cares about anyway.

spanko=all chest and back and nothing more

AJ measured his arms at bout 16 inches and he weighed what on stage? a buck 85 or so? at that weight his arms should be at least 17 inches

King Zane had 17's I believe and at bout a buck 85

remember... Mentzers bigass arms were 18 5/8

btw, where's analballslicker? we're in his domain now, arm measurements and such lol

I have to honestly say that Franco looked amazing that year and, when you consider the terrible injury he was coming back from (only 4 years earlier), it really was one of the best comebacks ever. However, he had ZERO separation in his quads. His legs weren't really small and he had good calves but absolutely no separation or definition in his legs. When he won the title in 1976, not many bodybuilders had great legs. By 1981, legs were a big part of competition and you had Padilla, Platz, Callendar and Dickerson all with excellent leg development. For that reason alone, Franco could not have been any higher than 5th. Once Danny was announced in 5th, the crowd erupted into boos and it didn't stop all the way to the end of the contest. Arnold and Joe Weider wouldn't even come out to raises Franco's hand onstage. Arnold took the victory pics with Franco backstage.

While Danny Padilla was great (should have been 2nd), Tom Platz was the best he'd ever been and would ever be again in 1981. His upper body became quite massive in its own right. I believe he showed up at 218 pounds at just under 5'7" and imo he should have won it that year, with Danny following behind (Danny shockingly placed 5th that year).

take franco c out dickerson came in second which would now be first according to the judges. :o :o :o :o :o

Thanks for the insight.  I don't think Franco deserves the hate for that showing,  it's not like he appeared on stage smooth and pregnant and as you say and considering his injury looked pretty damn good despite lack of thigh separation and some gyno.  However that injury isn't a factor onstage and there were better, more complete physiques.  Dunno how Dickerson was ever considered top tier though, crappy structure, not even a decent fdb.

What was Joe honestly expecting? People to cheer Franco's pre-determined win? Making the top 6 would have been a gift in and of itself. Placing him 2 spots above Platz and putting Danny way down in 5th was INSANE. Joe should have seen the discontent and outrage from the fans coming a mile away.
