For Dems, 'blue wave' is now a trickle
By Alice Stewart
Updated 3:34 AM EDT, Fri May 11, 2018

Editor's Note: (Alice Stewart is a CNN Political Commentator and former communications director for the Ted Cruz for President campaign. The views expressed in this commentary are hers.)

(CNN) The ballot on Tuesday left off the biggest winners: President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who stepped in to stand up for and against certain candidates.

Republican candidates who embraced President Trump and his "drain the swamp" message came out on top in key Senate and congressional races in West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and North Carolina, setting the stage for a strong field of GOP candidates heading into the general election in November.

Learning lessons from the past, the GOP is now determined to field a strong team of candidates heading into November. If the party bolsters this resolve with a strong economy and significant presidential foreign policy advancements, the GOP will be on solid ground. The Democrats may still pick up some seats, but the anticipated Blue Wave will be more like an uphill battle.

Trump didn't hold back in tweeting his approval Wednesday morning, saying, "The Republican Party had a great night. Tremendous voter energy and excitement, and all candidates have a chance of winning in November."

In the crucial West Virginia Senate primary, Republican State Attorney General Patrick Morrisey pulled off an upset and scored a win for the party over Rep. Evan Jenkins and former inmate and coal baron Don Blankenship. Morrisey will take on incumbent Joe Manchin, one of the most centrist Democrats in the Senate, in November.

To say this roller-derby type race gave GOP leaders a little heartburn is an understatement. Morrisey and Jenkins were out early with a fierce primary fight. Blankenship got into the race late with a slew of controversial, racially insensitive comments and a fierce attack on McConnell, calling him "Cocaine Mitch," and claiming he created jobs for "China people."

West Virginia (which Trump won by 42 points in 2016) offers one of the best chances Republicans have to turn a blue state red in the 2018 midterms, and after the disastrous mistake of nominating Roy Moore, who faced allegations of sexual abuse, in conservative stronghold Alabama, Republicans felt additional pressure to stop Blankenship in order to nominate a viable primary candidate heading into November.

Trump even used the bully pulpit of his Twitter feed to discourage voters from supporting Blankenship.

In the Indiana Senate GOP primary, businessman Mike Braun beat US Reps. Luke Messer and Todd Rokita in a heated primary battle. Given that Trump won Indiana in 2016 by 20 points, all three candidates positioned themselves as the most dedicated to Trump supporters.

Messer wrote a letter nominating Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize, while Rokita played up to the base by running an ad bashing the Mueller investigation as a "witch hunt." Braun, who will face incumbent Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly in the fall, beat Messer and Rokita by depicting himself as an outsider businessman like Trump.

In the Ohio GOP primary, both Rep. Jim Renacci and businessman Mike Gibbons campaigned as the ultimate outsider candidate. Trump-backed Renacci focused on his disgust with Washington status quo. Trump won Ohio in 2016 by a much smaller margin than West Virginia or Indiana, and many say Trump's endorsement of Renacci, who will run against Sen. Sherrod Brown in the general election, was a key factor in his win.

In North Carolina, GOP Rep. Robert Pittenger became the first incumbent to lose in the 2018 primary cycle. Former Rev. Mark Harris of Charlotte's First Baptist Church beat Pittenger with his "drain the swamp" message, running against the GOP-controlled Congress as much as against Pittenger. Harris now prepares for a competitive general election race against Iraq War veteran Dan McCready.

The Democrats' anticipated Blue Wave was downgraded as voters backed strong candidates who can enable the GOP to hold and potentially expand its majority in the crucial midterm elections. As a footnote, it goes without saying that in this crazy world of politics, even losers win; at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Blankenship's parole ended. He said he plans to head to a luxury resort to relax and play blackjack. The winning candidates are off to the races in November.

That's what happens when you run a campaign based on popularity and not on real issues.

Some day they will get it.

It's a new generation coming to power and they do not believe the old left-vs-right story. They do not read the mainstream newspapers or watch the mainstream media. If they want their information they will search for it on the internet and get all sides of the story. Chopped heads and all. They do not understand why they have to pay 300k for an education that only nets them 50k a year and shitty jobs. And most of all, they do not understand why us pre-millennials have been voting the same shitheads into office, the same assholes that have perpetuated and precipitated the REAL issues in this country: 1) loss of real income, 2) precarious job security, 3) advancement of fringe issues (gay/tranny rights, global warming, et cetera) 4) fair and equal of tax structures, 5) open borders, 6) education costs getting out of hand, 7) the US having too intense of an international presence (militarily speaking,) 8) globalization, 9) dollar losing all its value, et cetera.

Every time I hear a leftist or a foreigner talking about Trump, I always come back to the same observation: My grandfather grew up in Long Island, was the only bread winner in the house and made enough money to pay for a 4-bedroom house, pay for his 3 kids' education, buy cars, go on vacation, et cetera. Some one, please, explain to me what the fuck happened. It's not education (my grandpa was an electrician and I work in financial/hr services). The media certainly AREN'T talking about this.

And then people wonder how and why Trump won? REALLY? REALLY?

part of it is wages haven't kept up with inflation. But part of it is that your grandfather probably lived in a 900 sq ft house. His cars didn't have very much technology and he was fine with that. Vacations were usually a road trip to a location not too far away, not plane tickets for 4 or 5 and Disneyworld. TV channels if they owned a TV were free. He didn't pay $100 a month for cell phone and unlimited data etc etc. In other words, todays consumers have been brainwashed by advertisements into buying a lot of things they don't need, spending money they don't have and thus having to increase their incomes by adding jobs and hours.

DNC Fundraising Woes Continue Ahead of Midterm Elections
The Washington Free Beacon ^ | May 21, 2018 | Jack Heretic
Posted on 5/22/2018, 8:15:44 AM by Diana in Wisconsin

The Democratic National Committee's latest fundraising numbers show the party continues to have trouble with fundraising as the 2018 midterm elections approach.

April 2018 marked the DNC's worst April of fundraising in a midterm election year since 2006, according to data filed with the Federal Election Commission.

While the DNC raised only $7.9 million in April 2018, the Republican National Committee raised $13 million. April's numbers brought the RNC's totals to $43.8 million cash-on-hand and no debt, while the DNC's totals came to $8.7 million cash-on-hand and $5.3 million of debt.

Some of the money recently spent by the DNC went to Onward Together, a group led by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, after it bought the group's contact lists.

Democrats' fundraising woes come as they try to take the majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. That goal is particularly challenging in the Senate, where Democrats will be defending several seats in states President Donald Trump won in 2016.

DNC Chair Tom Perez remains optimistic Democrats will take the majority in Congress despite the party's lack of funds, funds that have only diminished since he took the helm at the DNC in February, 2017.

Good post and while I voted for Hillary, I understand why Trump won the key states and retains a 40% base.

As you alluded to, the real problems people now face aren't being addressed . Like many before him , Trump talked a good game
and promised the moon for the struggling working class. He was effective at getting folks excited and talked in direct terms about immigration
and national security.

But the solutions aren't that simple and don't work for sound bites on the campaign  trail.
To quote Pres. Trump himself , during the health care bill debates ;
" Who knew health care could be this complicated." :o

I saw the infamous videos and it didn't look good for them.
I'm pro-choice and don't have any problems with legal abortions within the 1st 90 days.
Planned Parenthood doesn't perform the actual abortion, so that's a bit misleading.

People can and will debate the abortion issue.
Since Planned Parenthood is all about choice in female reproduction,
the Pro-Life will side against them.

We offer services in:

Abortion Referral

Abortion Pill (Medical Abortion)

In-clinic Abortion Procedures

Sedation Options

Post-Abortion Follow-Up Exams

Other Abortion Services

That's correct, they CAN refer them to the clinic with a doc that performs the procedure.
That's what being "pro choice " is all about, giving her the CHOICE to carry to term or end the pregnancy.

The religious right groups, only back carrying to term and refuse to give info on abortion services.
I'm 100% behind Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood doesn't perform the actual abortion, so that's a bit misleading.

Still a liar I see.

"You can get an abortion from a doctor, abortion clinic, or Planned Parenthood health center."   https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/abortion/in-clinic-abortion-procedures/how-do-i-get-an-in-clinic-abortion

Wow !

Planned Parenthood doesn't bring woman in and just give them an abortion.
They provide OPTIONS and abortion is one viable option.
No pregnant woman is pressured to get an abortion . No woman is forced or told the wrong medical info.
That's the impression the pro life folks want to promote. That's misleading.

In the sprit of being totally honest ( so there is no confusion ):
1. I'm 100% pro-choice and support the viable choice planned parenthood provides pregnant females.
2. I see nothing wrong with providing a service that can refer woman to a legit abortion doctor with proper medical facillities.

You may not agree with my view, but you have to admit I'm being very clear and honest about it.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. I gave you two quotes from Planned Parenthood's own website confirming they do abortions at Planned Parenthood.  Why are you lying?

Ok, I can see how you got your panties in a bunch because I made brief post , that PP doesn't do the actual abortion.
But, it's a fair point that PP is affilaited with abortion providers, and it seems a rather semantic difference.Fair enough
No shit, they have affiliated clinics they can refer woman to. Ok?
For convenience, some of the clinics are in the same building.

It's an optional service a pregnant woman can get thru planned parenthood.
If you want to say that PP provides it, ok, fine since it's affiliated with them.
Pro lifers don't want any abortions and pro choice folks like me think it should be made available.
I don't care where the actual clinic is and I suspect most ro life folks don't either.

I never said they didn't refer anyone for an abortion.

I have no problems with any "on site" abortion clinics.

You are one dishonest mofo.  You said PP doesn't do abortions.  That's a lie.  They do as confirmed on their own website.  You're as bad as a little kid lying about eating cookies, despite having crumbs all over his mouth.

Ok, I posted that I posted a brief line about PP not doing abortions.
Technically that's legally correct, but I can see your point and said so in my previous post.

You're correct  they don't do the actual abortion procedure but have affiliated clinics in the same building, so wtf.
I agree, in practical terms , it's the same thing, so I understand your point and can understand it.

But I don't like your personal insults, but that's life on an internet forum.

It's very unlikely we'd ever meet in person but I suspect you'd be more polite. ;)
I'd like to say " no hard feelings" but I'd be lying to you

What the heck are you talking about?  Nothing about your statement is correct.  What does "legally correct" mean??
