I am 57, start lifting at late 80ties, and still making good gains, so guess what? Your statement is bullshit. In fact, there is no age and no amount of training which stop your gains, if you do it smartly.
What comes to this geek and squatting, what Tom Platz has tell in the interviews? He learn right way to do squats just looking how Olympic lifters, like that geek, did it. These kind of squats, hack squats like Tom used to do them, some extensions and presses, and if your thigh doesn't grow, try to find some another sport, like chess.
